“…Many researchers try to install certain defects into crystalline and glass materials to control the decay time of long-lasting phosphorescence. Numerous practical materials have been developed, which an emission is strong enough to be observed by naked eyes for a time period exceeding 8 h. So far, long-lasting phosphorescence phenomena have been observed in rareearth ions doped polycrystalline [7,8] and glasses which were prepared under strong reduction environment [9 -11] or were treated by an infrared femtosecond laser [12,13]. In this paper we report that a long-lasting phosphorescence phenomenon was observed in a Sn 2þ -Cu 2þ co-doped silicate glass without any special treatment.…”

“…However, these mechanisms gave the initial idea to the present studies : the mechanisms published proposed the formation of single valent Eu+ and tetravalent Nd 4+ and/or D/+ [30][31][32][33][34] -or, at least, the presence of their virtual counterparts as charge transfer states and excited 5d electron configurations. The presence of the Eu+ or Nd 4+ (and/or D/ +) species in ambient conditions and in oxide materials is, however, not acceptable and the suggested reduction of Eu 2+ to Eu+ (and oxidation of Nd 3+lDl+ to Nd4+ID/+) would require tremendous amounts of energy .…”

“…Accordingly, no general agreement has been achieved on the detailed mechanisms involved and several interesting and even exciting mechanisms have been proposed. Especially, the mechanisms resulting in the prolonged and enhanced afterglow when R 3+ ions have been introduced into MAl z0 4 :Eu z+ as co-dopants, are either ignored or are contradictory [30][31][32][33][34].…”
