Phenotypic and genetic characterization of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Infantis strains isolated from broiler chicken meats in Turkey

Abstract: Twenty Salmonella Infantis strains resistant against kanamycin, tetracycline, neomycin, spectinomycin, sulphonamide, nalidixic acid and trimethoprim were selected for this study out of 103 Salmonella strains isolated from broiler samples collected from several markets in the Bolu and Ankara regions of Turkey. The resistance genes aadA1, aphA1, sul1, tet(A), dfrA5/dfrA14 and gyrA were determined for these multidrug-resistant S. Infantis strains. S. Infantis strains contained a mega plasmid with the molecular si… Show more

“…The high number of isolates resistant to tetracycline, streptomycin and sulphonamides can also be explained by the genetic linkage of antimicrobialresistance genes coding for these types of resistance and their location on the same mobile genetic elements (Dolejská et al 2007). A high number of isolates from chicken broilers carrying an aadA and dfr genes was also confirmed by Šeputiene et al (2010) and Abbasoglu & Akcelik (2011).…”

“…Class 1 integrons have been identified previously in S. enterica serovar Typhimurium isolated from diseased turkeys in the USA (15) and from animals in Italy (11), the USA (14) and Japan (8). Furthermore, class 1 integrons have previously been identified in many Salmonella serovars isolated from retail chicken meats in Japan (31) and more recently in China and Turkey (32,33). Of note, S. enterica serovar Typhimurium strain S12-2 displayed the multidrug resistant phenotype of SGI1, that is, resistant to AMP, CHL, STR, sulfonamides and TET (21) ( Table 3).…”
