Phenolic composition, antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of aqueous‐methanol extract from Anneslea fragrans leaves as affected by drying methods

Abstract: Summary The present study is aimed to evaluate the effect of three different drying methods, including shade drying (SD), freeze drying (FD) and hot air dying (HAD), on the chemical components, antioxidant and cytoprotective activities of aqueous‐methanol extracts from A. fragrans leaves. The total phenolic and flavonoid content were determined by spectroscopic methods, whereas the chemical profile of different extracts was determined by ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with a tandem mass s… Show more

“…Confusoside (CF) is a dihydrochalcone glucoside, also known as davidigenin 4′- O - β -d-glucoside, which is mainly present in the plants of the Anneslea and Symplocos genera. The leaves of Anneslea fragrans , or “Pangpo Tea”, are traditionally used as an herbal tea for the treatment of liver and intestinal diseases [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects [ 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”

“…The leaves of Anneslea fragrans , or “Pangpo Tea”, are traditionally used as an herbal tea for the treatment of liver and intestinal diseases [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Our studies found that CF is a major chemical compound in the leaves of A. fragrans , which may have beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects [ 17 , 18 , 19 ], but whether CF has a hepatoprotective effect in liver disease has not yet been explored.…”

“…Cheng20191021-08) was stored at the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering, Kunming University of Science and Technology ( , accessed on 21 October 2019). According to previous studies, the aerial parts of P. wallichiana were dried by the shade-drying method and then powdered by using a pulverizer [ 47 ]. Then, the sample was extracted with 80% ethanol aqueous solution for three times (30 min each time) by an ultrasonic assisted extraction method at room temperature [ 48 , 49 ].…”

“…Compared with the H 2 O 2 -treated group, compounds 2, 5, and 6 remarkably suppressed intracellular ROS production (p < 0.05), and their inhibitory effect was equal to the Vc group (Figure 3). Many phenolics have been proven to have protective effect against intracellular ROS by H 2 O 2 induction [31]. Additionally, compound 6 displayed the strongest suppressive effect on intracellular ROS production, which suggests that flavonoid compounds play a crucial role in inhibiting intracellular ROS production.…”
