Phase transition-governed opal–VO2 photonic crystal

Abstract: Three-dimensional opal–VO2 photonic crystals were prepared by the chemical bath deposition technique. The x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic data confirm the crystalline perfection of VO2 impregnated into synthetic opal pores. It is shown from the optical reflectivity measurements that the photonic bandgap of the opal–VO2 composite is governed by the phase transition in VO2.

“…Recently, PSB shifting, assisted by a ferroelectric phase transitions, has been experimentally demonstrated [79]. However, the largest shift of a PSB in 3D photonic crystals, was observed in a photonic crystal built from an opal filled with VO 2 [80] that exhibits a semiconductor-metal phase transition. At the phase transition, the change in the effective refractive index of the opal results in PSB shifts of 40-nm [81].…”

“…Large refractive index changes of the backbone can also be attained by heat induced phase transitions in opal VO 2 composites [87]. Ultrafast changes in the Bragg peak of such structures with switching times of 350 fs have recently been demonstrated [88].…”

“…For the inverse photonic crystal based on vanadium dioxide reflection spectrum was recorded ( figure 4 (a)). Contour width is about of 50 nm, which is 2-3 times less than in the spectra of similar samples from the reference [9] ( figure 4 (b)). In this way, the phase transition of vanadium dioxide will be accompanied by an abrupt change of the band structure that is required to create quality femtosecond optical switches.…”
