Phase Enhancement for Multi-Resonance Compact Metamaterial Antennas

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, a nonlinear phase enhancement of multi-resonance composite right/lefthanded unit cell for multi-band antennas is presented. Different antennas with nonlinear enhanced phase which can operate up to five different frequency bands are introduced. Meanwhile, the proposed antennas have compact size so that they can demonstrate size reduction up to 60% compared to conventional patch antennas operating at the same frequencies. The achieved phase enhancement has been validated by comparing two … Show more

“…Composite right/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH) (65), also referred to as negative refractive index, have unique nonlinear frequencydependent sub-wavelength impedance or phase electromagnetic wave propagation. Thanks to these properties many compact and multi-band antennas have been realized (66)(67)(68), especially at low microwave frequencies, using CRLH. The approach was made to target to produce a significant bandwidth at the same time eliminate the cost of large antenna volume.…”

“…CRLH cells consist of capacitors in series and inductors in shunt. In addition, due to the remarkable features such as nonlinear phase, positive, negative, and zero-propagation of antenna properties, which make them very useful for controlling the electrical-length of the antenna resulting in more compactness than traditional halfwavelength antennas with multi-band configurations [9][10][11][12].…”

“…From other aspects, the coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed antenna is simple to be integrated with other microwave circuits. For reducing the size of the CPW ground, asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS)-fed antenna has been suggested to reduce the microwave devices and antennas [11,12] To reduce the size as well as coupling effects, composite rightleft-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) structures have been used for small-sized antennas [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] and also in MIMO TL antennas with small mutual coupling [20][21][22][23][24]. This has been gained thanks to the CRLH unique electromagnetic properties such as anti-parallel group velocities, zeroth-order resonance and nonlinear phase.…”
