Phase Behaviors of PU/SPI Green Composites Using SAXS Profiles

Abstract: A series of polyurethane (PU) green composites have been synthesized with varying amounts, namely 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 wt% of soya protein isolate (SPI) by two methods. In the first method, castor oil (CO) and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) molar ratio is CO/TDI : 1/1 with varying amounts of the SPI content. In the second method, the molar ratio of TDI is calculated by considering the -OH groups of both CO and SPI. We made the assumption that, in the first method, SPI acts as a filler and in the second method SP… Show more

“…Compared to ester bonds, the absorption peaks of the urethane linkages overlapped at 1,724 cm −1 , 1,526 cm −1 , and 1,172 cm −1 , and resulted in unclear assignment of the three peaks for S50P50 and S45P45PUP10 samples. Further, comparing with the peak at 1,526 cm −1 for PUP, the peak at 1,526 cm −1 for S45P45PUP10 became stronger and wider, suggesting the existence of new urethane linkages . The new urethane linkages were formed from the reaction of the OH or NH groups of SPI and the NCO groups of PUP, which was in agreement with the results obtained by Chen et al and Deng et al .…”

“…[7] Furthermore, using a bio-based and/ or biodegradable polymer as the material matrix can additionally increase the green credentials of the WPCs. [8,9] Green composites are a specific class of WPCs, in which the matrix is a biopolymer. [10] In this regard, the use of NFs such as jute, sisal, flax, hemp, and bamboo fibers on biopolymers has been recently intensified.…”

“…The DSC thermograms indicate that as the SPI content increases the T g of the green composites are slightly increases up to 8 wt% of SPI filler loading. The improvement in T g values of the PU/SPI green composites can be ascribed to (i) the dispersed SPI filler in PU matrix, which restrict the free motion of the polymer chains, and (ii) there is strong hydrogen bonding between –OH groups of SPI and urethane groups of PUs, which can also retard the motion of polymer chains …”
