Pharmacokinetics of doxycycline in tilapia (Oreochromis aureus × Oreochromis niloticus) after intravenous and oral administration

Abstract: The pharmacokinetics of doxycycline was studied in plasma after a single dose (20 mg/kg) of intravenous or oral administration to tilapia (Oreochromis aureus × Oreochromis niloticus) reared in fresh water at 24 °C. Plasma samples were collected from six fish per sampling point. Doxycycline concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with a 0.005 μg/mL limit of detection, then were subjected to noncompartmental analysis. Following oral administration, the double-peak phenomenon was … Show more

“…In the present study, all fish were fasted overnight and fed feed 12 hr after oral administration, which might contribute to the higher bioavailability in crucian carps. Lower oral bioavailability was also reported for doxycycline in tilapia (23.41%; (Yang et al, 2014)). However, all of them were lower than that estimated here.…”

“…It has good pharmacokinetics properties, including high assimilation rate and wide distribution to different body tissues after oral treatment (Aronson 1980;Riond and Riviere 1988). DOX kinetic properties have been studied in channel catfish and Nile tilapia (Ai et al 2011;Ding et al 2009;Yang et al 2014).…”
