pH-dependent bactericidal effects of acidulated fluoride gels on preformed plaque aggregates of Streptococcus mutans 6715

Abstract: The anticaries action of topically applied sodium fluoride (NaF) preparations has been attributed, at least in part, to the antibacterial effect of fluoride on cariogenic bacteria. In this report we examined the bactericidal activity of acidulated NaF gels against preformed plaque aggregates of Streptococcus mutans 6715. Both commercially available and laboratory-prepared gels were tested. Prepared NaF gels were acidified to various pH levels with HCI, H3PO4, or HF. The aggregates of S. mutans were immersed in… Show more

“…The BG contain 11.04 mol% of calcium fluoride or strontium fluoride. Fluoride is known to have bactericidal effects [30], particularly under acidic conditions [31], and as PAA reduces the pH of the surrounding medium compared to the blank it may be this combined bactericidal action of fluoride and acidic pH which works for all materials in this study, including the strontium-free positive control, thereby affecting cells and reducing cell numbers. Although the relative Sr 2þ release (compared with its total amount) decreased with strontium substitution, the absolute strontium concentrations in solution increased with increasing strontium substitution.…”

“…Fluoride has been indicated as a major contributor in the treatment and prevention of dental caries because of its cariostatic and remineralizing properties. Previous work has demonstrated in vitro antibacterial effects against MS (6, 8); however, the clinical antimicrobial value of these formulations has been questioned. While an observed caries reduction with the use of topical fluoride is frequently a fact (25), decrease in the prevalence of this disease has not always been associated with a decline in the numbers of MS (11, 33), leading to controversies as to its antibacterial properties.…”
