Petroleomics by EASI(±) FT-ICR MS

Abstract: An ambient ionization/desorption technique, namely, easy ambient sonic-spray ionization mass spectrometry (EASI), has been applied to crude oil samples. From a single droplet of the sample placed on an inert surface, EASI(+/-) is shown to promote efficient desorption and ionization of a myriad of polar components via the action of its cloud of very minute supersonic bipolar charged droplets. The gaseous [M + H](+) and [M - H](-) ions concurrently formed by EASI(+/-) were analyzed by Fourier transform mass spec… Show more

“…The electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) technique has been shown to provide a comprehensive overview, at the molecular level, of complex mixtures such as natural organic matter and crude oils [25,26]. Therefore, we decided to study DEBRIS obtained from HNO 3 -treated MWCNTs by the ESI FT-ICR MS technique.…”

“…Ultra-high resolution and mass accuracy mass spectrometers, such as those using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) analysers, have been successfully applied in metabolomics investigations for many years (Aharoni et al, 2002;Cuadros-Inostroza et al, 2010;Takahashi et al, 2008). FT-ICR MS provides high mass resolution and accuracy with mass errors of 1 ppm or less, which combined with a soft ionization, as electrospray ionization (ESI), enables the determination of molecular formulae from mass measurements only (Corilo et al, 2010;Garrett, Vaz, Hovell, Eberlin, & Rezende, 2012;Marshall & Rodgers, 2004).…”

“…The PetroMS process is described elsewhere [16]. We considered a match between the experimental m/z value and the theoretical m/z value from the library when the mass error was<1 ppm.…”

“…FT-ICR MS with electrospray ionization (ESI) in both the positive and negative ion modes has been widely used in petroleomic studies to characterize crude oils and derivatives [15]. Petroleomics by ESI-FT-ICR MS has been shown to allow for class attributions of the thousands of polar compounds present in crude oils and to provide crucial data for the oil industry [16,17].…”
