Periodicity of Water‐borne Hyphomycetes in Two Streams of Western Ghat Forests (India)

Abstract: Summary:The seasonal variat'ion in the occurrence of water-borne hyphomycetes in the two &reams, viz. Kempu Hole and Kumaradhara, was investigated during 1983 and 1984. The fungi were isolated by using the four methods, viz. leaf litter analysis, water filtration and analysis of natural and induced foam. Thirty-six species of hyphomycetes in Kempu Hole and twenty species in Kumaradhara were recorded. Lunulospora curvula and Triscelophorus naonosporus were observed in high frequency in all seasons in both the s… Show more

“…Three methods of analysis were employed to study the mycoflora: leaf litter incubation, and analysis of natural foam and of induced foam [3,6,8,10]. For leaf litter analysis about 10 submerged leaves of different species collected in sterile polythene bags from each of the three locations were brought to the laboratory and washed several times in water to remove extraneous materials.…”

“…[11]. Most of the studies on these fungi are restricted to aquatic systems where the temperature of waters ranged between 0 and 26°C [2,3,9,12]. However, recently Chandrashekar et al [4] reported the occurrence of aquatic hyphomycetes in the out flow region of a sulfur spring in the Western Ghats where the temperature of the water ranged between 26.5 and 36.5°C.…”

“…Similar spores had been earlier reported as unidentified fungi from Papua New Guinea (Tubaki 1965), India (Ingold and Webster 1973), and Japan (Matsushima 1975). Condylospora spumigena has also been found in India (Chandrashekar et al 1990), Puerto Rico (SantosFlores et al 1996), Thailand (Phongpaichit et al 2002), Poland (Czeczuga et al 2003), South America (Schoenlein-Crusius and Piccolo 2003), and Venezuela .…”
