Growth retardants have great potential to balance between vegetative and reproductive growth. To assess the effects of prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca, Regalis) on reproductive and vegetative growth, return bloom, fruit set, and also fruit quality in 'Golden Delicious' apple grafted on M.9 rootstock, an experiment was performed during 2010-2012. The applications of 125 mg dm -3 Pro-Ca on the same trees in each year resulted in a 40-43% shoot length reducing. Internodes length decreased with Pro-Ca at about 30%, while total node number was unaffected. Results indicate that Pro-Ca applications have no effects on tree trunk growth, flowering, yield, fruit set and development. Pro-Ca also didn't have any negative impact on fruit quality during the three consecutive years. Moreover, Pro-Ca resulted in higher fruit size compared to control in the third year of trial. The results of this experiment clearly suggest that fruit growers can use ProCa for the control of vegetative growth without having any negative effects on fruit quality and yield parameters. Once a full canopy has been achieved, annual shoot growth can be suppressed in the range of 20 to 30 cm with 125 mg dm -3 Pro-Ca treatment in 'Golden Delicious' apple trees.

La producción irregular en mango se atribuye a variación en la floración. Prohexadiona de calcio (P-Ca) reduce crecimiento vegetativo y favorece floración en frutales templados como manzano y subtropicales como aguacate. En mango ‘Ataulfo’, no hay información al respecto. El objetivo fue determinar dosis, época y número de aplicación de P-Ca en mango ‘Ataulfo’ con la finalidad de asegurar f loración y encontrar un sustituto para paclobutrazol (PBZ). El estudio se realizó de 2012 a 2014 en Tepic y San Blas Nayarit, en ambos años, los árboles fueron podados después de cosecha. Experimento 1 y 2: P-Ca (150, 250 y 500 mg L-1) a 0+10+20+30 días después de la poda (ddp) y 30+45+60 ddp, respectivamente. Experimento 3: P-Ca (500 mg L-1) una, dos o tres aplicaciones a 0, 0+10 y 0+10+20 ddp y Experimento 4: P-Ca (150 y 500 mg L-1) a 30+45+60 ddp y 1 500 mg L-1 en una sola aplicación (1 x) 30 ddp. En todos los experimentos se incluyó un tratamiento estándar de PBZ (2 500 mg L-1) 30 ddp y un testigo (agua más surfactante). El diseño fue completamente al azar, 6 repeticiones, un árbol como unidad experimental. En Experimento 2, se logró reducir un 35% el crecimiento vegetativo con P-Ca 500 mg L-1 (3 x) entre 30-60 ddp. Esta misma dosis de P-Ca (500 mg L-1) (3 x) a 30, 45 y 60 ddp, o una sola aplicación (1 500 mg L-1) 30 ddp logró igual el efecto de PBZ en adelanto (20-35 días) y porcentaje de floración. En los dos ciclos, ambos productos mejoraron amarre y producción de fruto. Con base a los resultados obtenidos se considera que P-Ca pudiera ser un sustituto para PBZ en mango ‘Ataulfo’ para asegurar floración y producciones regulares año con año.

RESUMO -O controle do desenvolvimento vegetativo é fundamental na cultura da macieira, a fim de aumentar a eficiência produtiva e a qualidade dos frutos produzidos. O desenvolvimento dos ramos pode ser reduzido pelo uso de substâncias inibidoras da biossíntese de giberelinas, como o proexadione cálcio, sendo a resposta deste fitorregulador dependente do padrão sazonal do crescimento da parte aérea. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes épocas de aplicação de proexadione cálcio no controle do desenvolvimento vegetativo de macieiras 'Imperial Gala', nas condições climáticas do Sul do Brasil. APPLICATION TIMING OF PROHEXADIONE CALCIUM ON VEGETATIVE GROWTH CONTROL OF 'IMPERIAL GALA' APPLESABSTRACT -The control of vegetative growth is crucial in apple orchards in order to increase production efficiency and fruit quality. The shoot development may be reduced by inhibitors of gibberellins synthesis, as prohexadione calcium, and the response of this plant growth regulator depends on the seasonal pattern of shoot growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different application timing of prohexadione calcium on vegetative growth control of 'Imperial Gala' apple trees, in the climatic conditions of Southern Brazil. In 2008/2009 growing season, the following application timings of prohexadione calcium at 330 g ha -1 were evaluated: 28, 58, 88, 118, 148 and 178 days after full bloom -DAFB, and in 2009/2010 growing season, the application timings were: 20, 50, 80, 110, 140, 170 and 200 DAFB, and a control treatment. Applications of prohexadione calcium (330 g ha -1 ) performed at 20 to 28 days after full bloom reduced the average length and average fresh weight of shoots pruned in 'Imperial Gala' apple trees.
