Impact of Repeated Yearly Applications of Prohexadione-Calcium On Vegetative and Reproductive Growth of ‘Golden Delicious’/M.9 Apple Trees

Abstract: Growth retardants have great potential to balance between vegetative and reproductive growth. To assess the effects of prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca, Regalis) on reproductive and vegetative growth, return bloom, fruit set, and also fruit quality in 'Golden Delicious' apple grafted on M.9 rootstock, an experiment was performed during 2010-2012. The applications of 125 mg dm -3 Pro-Ca on the same trees in each year resulted in a 40-43% shoot length reducing. Internodes length decreased with Pro-Ca at about 30%, w… Show more

“…That also correlated with the highest yield, though there were no significant differences among treatments. Flowering intensity was very similar between treatments with some positive impact of summer pruning and lower doses of Pro-Ca.Numerous studies proved these findings that various growth-control technologies have more significant impacts on tree vegetative growth but not on the yield (Costa et al 2001, Maas 2008, Meland and Kasier 2016, Atay and Koyncu 2017.…”

“…The applications of 125 mg L -1 ProCa on the same trees for three years resulted in a 40-43% shoot length reducing. Internodes length decreased at about 30%, while the number of total nodes was unaffected 24 . Miller 25 proposed that in shoot growth control, ProCa applied as single spray or multiple low-rate sprays at petal fall (PF) or within 10 days after PF were better than at 2-3 weeks after PF, and the time of initial spray was more critical in achieving early shoot growth control than rate, but to achieve season-long shoot growth suppression, higher rate was needed.…”

“…W hen applied as a soil drench in November, PP333 (4 g a.i per tree) decreased growth, internode length, leaf area, stomatal size, water potential, transpiration rate, endogenous GA content, stomatal conductance and increased leaf thickness, leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthesis of the olive cultivar Leccino under rain-fed conditions in Himachal Pradesh, India (Kumar and Sharma, 2016). The use of 125 mg/dm-3 prohexadione-calcium inhibited vegetative growth of Golden Delicious apple trees while having no influence on fruit quality or yield parameters (Atay and Koyuncu, 2017).…”
