This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the summer pruning time in ‘Fuji’ apple trees on the quality of fruit at harvest and after storage in controlled atmosphere with extremely low O2 (CA-ELO) (0.5 kPa O2). The treatments evaluated were summer pruning in December, January, and February, in addition to a control treatment (without summer pruning). The experiment was carried out in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 growing seasons. The fruit were evaluated at harvest and after eight months of CA-ELO (0.5 kPa O2 + <0.5 kPa CO2/1.5 ± 0.2°C/92 ± 2% RH) storage, at chamber opening, and after 7 days of shelf-life at 23 ± 3°C and 60 ± 5% RH. The quality of the fruit was evaluated through of soluble solids, flesh firmness, titratable acidity, fruit color, and physiological disorder incidence (sunburn and flesh browning), in addition to enzymatic activity and concentration of functional compounds. There was no significant effect of the summer pruning time on fruit flesh firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, and rot incidence after storage under CA-ELO plus 7 days of shelf life. Summer pruning in February resulted in fruit with higher peel red color development, which in general contains a higher concentration of functional compounds at harvest (total phenolic compounds and total antioxidant activity), and lower flesh browning incidence in ‘Fuji’ apples stored under CA-ELO. The nitrogen (N) concentration and nitrogen/calcium ratio (N/Ca) in the second growing season were lower in fruit from plants pruned in February, compared to no summer pruning or earlier pruning. The superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme activity were lower in fruit from treatments with summer pruning in January and February, whereas the polyphenol oxidase enzyme activity was lower when summer pruning was conducted in February.

Converting Tall Spindle Apple Trees to Narrow Walls with Summer and Dormant Hedging Plus Root Pruning

Recently, some commercial apple growers have been adopting hedging as an alternative or supplement to hand-pruning. With increasing labor costs across the United States, alternatives to hand-pruning and current training systems are being considered. One management strategy involves transitioning tall spindle trees to a narrow tree wall and simplifying labor-intensive activities of apple production, such as pruning, harvesting, and fruit thinning. The objective is to form the orchard system into a “fruiting wall” that makes fruit more visible and accessible, thus facilitating harvesting. Four management practices (tall spindle; narrow tree wall with manual pruning; narrow tree wall with dormant and summer hedging; and narrow tree wall with dormant hedging, summer hedging, and root pruning) were used to convert 12-year-old ‘Brak Fuji’ apple trees from the tall spindle training system to a narrow tree wall. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet light levels within the canopies were improved by summer hedging, but they were still low for all treatments. Light within the canopy was improved most when root pruning was included. Specific leaf weight was not significantly impacted by hedging or root pruning. Detailed spur sampling showed that treatments had no effect on vegetative or reproductive growth on 2- to 3-year-old wood. Although dormant plus summer hedging alone did not affect shoot length, the combination of hedging and root pruning caused a significant reduction in terminal shoot length. Red fruit color was only improved with dormant hedging plus summer hedging plus root pruning. Compared with dormant plus summer hedging, dormant plus summer hedging plus root pruning improved fruit set and yield, but it reduced fruit size. Without root pruning, hedging had little effect on light, specific leaf weight, flower initiation, fruit set, and fruit quality. Conversion to narrow tree walls by manual pruning resulted in more poorly colored fruit and less highly colored fruit compared with maintaining the trees as tall spindles with manual pruning.

Plodovi jabuke se nakon berbe mogu ~uvati i du`e od 12 meseci (Mratini} & \urovi}, 2015), dostupni su na tr`i{tu tokom cele godine i konzumiraju se u najve}oj meri kao sve`e vo}e. Kvalitetan i rentabilan proces ~uvanja plodova jabuke mogu}e je posti}i samo ukoliko se skladi{te plodovi koji u trenutku berbe ispunjavaju odre|ene kriterijume u pogledu kvaliteta. Na kvalitet i skladi{ni potencijal plodova jabuke uti~e veliki broj faktora, me|u kojima su najva`niji: sorta, podloga, ekolo{ki faktori, berba u optimalnoj fazi zrelosti (Mra-tini} & \urovi}, 2015), kao i pravilna primena agro-i pomotehni~kih mera u vo}njaku, pre berbe, a koje podrazumevaju adekvatnu ishranu, navodnjavanje, optimalnu rezidbu, tretiranje sa preparatima na bazi kalcijuma, i primenu biljnih regulatora rasta (Magazin & \urovi}, 2017).Biljni regulatori rasta imaju {iroku upotrebu u vo-}arstvu i ostvaruju zna~ajan uticaj na kvalitet i traja-{nost plodova. Najpoznatije klase biljnih regulatora su: auksini (IAA), giberelini (GA), citokinini (CK), abscisinska kiselina (ABA) i etilen. Pored njih novije otkrivene grupe jedinjenja su: brasinosteroidi, jasmonati, oligosaharini, salicinati i poliamini. Primena biljnih regulatora rasta uglavnom ima za cilj da optimizuje rodnost i kvalitet plodova, pri tom neki od njih imaju direktno za cilj pobolj{anje kvaliteta i traja{nosti plodova, dok se u drugim slu~ajevima taj uticaj ispoljava indirektno. U proizvodnji jabuke se upotrebljavaju u cilju regulisanja bujnosti i rodnosti, popravke kvaliteta plodova, spre~avanja opadanja plodova, odlaganja sazrevanja i pobolj{anja skladi{ne sposobnosti ploda (Radivojevi} et al., 2017). Njihova upotreba je postala redovna i neizostavna u tehnologiji gajenja jabuke, a mogu biti mo}no sredstvo za postizanje 47
