Summary:The present experiment was carried out to determine the rumen dry mater (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradability of poppy seed meal, poppy seed, canola meal, sesame seed, hemp seed and groundnut meal. Three ruminally cannulated Merino rams weighing approximately 60 kg were used in the present experiment. Two nylon bags were used for each feed and each time of incubation per sheep. The bags were incubated in the rumen of each animal for 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 or 48 h. Significant (p<0.001) differences were obtained among the oilseeds and meals for DM and CP degradability according to feed samples and incubation times. Dry matter degradabiliy of canola meal was found slower than those of the other feeds up to 16 h incubation time. Hemp seed had the slowest dry matter degradability from 16 h to 48 h of incubation. Among the test materials poppy seed reached the lowest CP degradability at 24 h of incubation. Sesame seed was seen to have highest CP degradation at end of the 48 h of incubation. Although hemp seed protein degraded sharply at 2 h incubation period it showed a stabile degradation by the time. Dry matter 'a' fractions of feeds ranged from 12.18 % (canola meal) and 36.89 % (poppy seed). Although the effective dry matter degradability value for canola meal (49.62 % for 0.06 h -1 ) was the lowest, sesame seed (64.37 %, 0.06 h -1 ) dry matter P e was determined as the highest value. The lowest effective crude protein degradability value was seen for poppy seed (54.05 %, 0.06 h -1 ).

RESUMO -Com objetivo de determinar o consumo e a digestibilidade in vivo, bem como a composição química de dietas com níveis crescentes (0, 50 e 100%) de feno de catingueira (FC), utilizaram-se 15 ovinos Morada Nova, durante um período de 22 dias. Foi usado delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos e cinco repetições. O FC apresentou 91,5% de matéria seca (MS), 93,89% de matéria orgânica (MO), 11,25% de proteína (PB), 4,31% de extrato etéreo (EE), 45,47% de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN ABSTRACT -Fifteen male castrated sheep were used during a period of 22 days to determine the bromatological composition, intake and in vivo digestibility of diets with increasing levels (0, 50 and 100%) of "catingueira" hay (CH). A completely randomized experimental design with three treatment and five replications was used. "Catingueira" hay presented a 91.5% dry matter (DM), 93.89% organic matter (OM), 11.25% crude protein (CP), 4.31% ether extract (EE), 45.47% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 37.08% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 8.39% hemicellulose (HE), 24.37% cellulose (CE), 12.52% lignin, 1.86% silica and 6.30% condensed tannin. The increased CH levels in the diet linearly reduced the intakes of OM and DM (express in g/day, g/kg .75 and %LW), of gross energy (GE) (express in kcal/kg.day and kcal/kg 0,75 ) and of the cell wall components were. The intakes of CP, digestible protein (DP) and EE linearly increased as CH levels increased in the diet. The coefficients of digestibility of the DM, OM, CP and CE were not affected ed by inclusion of CH. However, a negative linear effect was observed for the coefficients digestibility of the NDF, ADF, CE and EE and a quadratic effect for the coefficient of digestibilities of HE. The average intake of DM and CP observed in the intermediate levels of CH attained the maintenance requirements of the animals.

Although most early-harvested forages meet the theoretical protein requirements of growing ruminants, protein supplementation usually enhances performance of growing beef cattle (Veira et al 1985;Seoane et al 1993), and this effect has not been necessarily related to higher DE intake (Seoane et al 1992). It remains to be clarified if the beneficial effect of protein supplementation depends on the ruminal degradability of the protein being fed.…”

Forty-eight lambs (29.0 ± 4.7 kg BW) were used to study the effects of protein supplementation of forages on performance and diet digestibility. Lambs were fed grass hay or silage ad libitum plus a daily supplement of either: C, a control supplement supplying 1.2 g kg -1 BW of dry molasses and 0.6 g kg -1 BW of minerals, vitamins and lasalocid; CM, control supplement + 5.48 g kg -1 BW of canola meal; or FM, control supplement + 3 g kg -1 BW of fish meal. Apparent digestibility of all dietary components was higher in lambs fed silage than in those fed hay (P < 0.04). Addition of CM or FM improved apparent digestibility of energy and crude protein (CP) of lambs fed hay (P < 0.02) and CP digestibility of lambs fed silage (P < 0.01). Apparent digestibility of CP was higher in lambs fed FM than in those fed CM with either hay or silage (P < 0.03). Addition of CM or FM tended to decrease ADF digestibility of silage-based diets (P < 0.06). Apparent ADF digestibility of hay-based diets was lower in lambs fed CM than in those fed FM (P < 0.02). Forage DM intake was similar for all treatments. Addition of CM or FM to the diets improved average daily gains by 24% (P < 0.03), an effect that was higher with hay (35.1%, P < 0.02). Feed efficiency was 23.6% better in lambs fed protein-supplemented hay than in those receiving C (P < 0.04). Neither dressing percentage nor carcass lean yield was affected by protein supplementation. Digestible DM and TDN intakes were higher in lambs fed silage (P < 0.03) as a result of higher apparent digestibility for silage than hay. Furthermore, CM increased TDN intake by 7.6 and 8.2% in lambs fed hay and silage, respectively, compared with lambs fed FM.
