Performance of Diesel Soot Oxidation in the Presence of Ash Species

Abstract: This paper studies the impact of ash component, ash particle diameter, soot particles (Printex U, PU)/ash stratification method, and PU/ash mixing ratio on the oxidation process by the thermogravimetric method. Compared with PU/Al2O3 and PU/MgO mixtures, the PU/ZnO mixture has the lowest peak temperature 560 °C and the highest comprehensive oxidation index 2.15 × 10–7%2 min–2 °C–3. ZnO particles (50 nm) lead to lower peak temperature and larger comprehensive oxidation index compared with 200 nm ZnO particles. … Show more

“…The first-order TG curves decrease by about 5%, which is due to the evaporation of water in the sample. 34 The second stage shows a slow decline at about 10%, because volatile components such as SOF are broken down. The oxidation reaction of soot mainly occurs in the third stage, and the sample reacts rapidly with the increase in temperature.…”

“…33 applied a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) to study the influence of different ash types on the oxidation performance of soot and indicated that the PU/ZnO mixture has the maximum comprehensive oxidation index (S ) compared with PU/Al 2 O 3 and PU/MgO mixtures. 34 Furthermore, Zhang et al used a thermogravimetric analyzer to study the interaction effect of SOF and ash on diesel soot oxidation, and the result shows that the mass ratio of PU/ZnO/15 W at 1/1/0.1 has a best combustion performance under an O 2 /N 2 atmosphere. 24 Soot oxidation characteristics are studied from the aspects of ash content, type of lubricating oil, the microstructure of soot, catalyst, and different operating parameters.…”

“…To ensure the stability of the instrument, the 10 min remaining time at the start and end of each experiment is carried out by computer program. The inlet flow rate, oxygen concentration and heating rate are 100 mL min −1 , 10% and 10 • C min −1 , respectively [31,32]. As the protective gas, the concentration of nitrogen is 90%.…”

“…PU is widely used to replace diesel engine emission particles because of its similar physical and chemical properties to diesel engine emission particles. It is well known that thermogravimetric analysis is a method to reflect the oxidation properties of substances, because the degree of weight loss during heat treatment can be represented by the TGA diagram. The major properties of PU (Degussa GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany) employed in TGA tests are shown in Table . A fixed bed reactor is used to provide different aging conditions for PU and PU/catalyst/ash mixtures, and its main parameters are shown in Table .…”
