“…Several papers using one or the other of these two methods were found in the retailing literature. “…DEA was actually first developed by Farrell (1957) and consolidated by Charnes et al (1978) as a non-parametric procedure that compares a decision-making unit (DMU) with an efficient frontier, using performance indicators. Some researchers have applied frontier models in retailing (Athanassopoulos, 1995(Athanassopoulos, , 2003Donthu and Yoo, 1998;Thomas et al, 1998;Barros, 2005Barros, , 2006; Alves, 2003, 2004). We are not aware of any previous research adopting this two-step procedure with a bootstrap approach in the retailing field.…”

“…In our study, we apply two controllable productive factors, namely, the number of employees (Thomas et al, 1998;Barros andAlves, 2003, 2004;Sellers-Rubio and Mas-Ruiz, 2006;Perrigot and Barros, 2008), and total selling floor space (Athanassopoulos, 1995;Donthu and Yoo, 1998;Lusch and Serpkenci, 1990;Pilling et al, 1995). Some details of the outputs and controllable inputs used in this study are shown in Table 2.…”

“…At micro level data and international perspective, some authors (Waldorf 1966;Goldman 1992) analyzed the average productivity of labor, while others (Hall, Knapp, Winsten 1961;Good 1984) studied the factors that explain this. Other studies (Athanassopoulos 1995;Donthu, Yoo 1998;Thomas et al 1998;Ratchford 2003;Barros, Alves 2003, 2004Barros 2005; De Jorge 2010) focus attention on the analysis of the levels of efficiency and the causes thereof. From a national perspective we find papers addressing the relationship between efficiency and regulation (De Jorge 2006;De Jorge, Suárez 2007, 2010, differences in efficiency between entrants and established firms considering the size and geographical location (De Jorge 2008), the relationship between efficiency, size and market concentration (Sellers-Rubio, Mas-Ruiz 2006) or the analysis of productivity (De Jorge 2009).…”
