Aim To determine and describe the experiences of pregnant women who receive a diagnosis of chromosomopathy and/or foetal malformation during a prenatal check‐up and who decide to legally terminate the pregnancy. Background When a pregnancy is terminated, the woman must cope with frustrated motherhood. The psychological consequences of this will largely depend on the care and support provided by health professionals. When a congenital anomaly is diagnosed, a patient‐centred communication helps understanding, influences adaptation to the new situation and ensures the person concerned has sufficient (autonomy or independence or ability) to make appropriate decisions. Methods A qualitative study, based on a phenomenological approach, was carried out through nonparticipant observation and semi‐structured interviews with 27 obstetric patients. NVivo 11 software was used, and content analysis was performed. The manuscript was developed using the COREQ guidelines to inform qualitative studies. Results The clinical relationship may be affected by communication problems such as patients' perceptions of scarce emotional involvement by obstetricians, by poor psychosocial support during the termination of the pregnancy and by insufficient follow‐up after discharge. Conclusion Nurses are in a privileged position to promote the empowerment of affected women. It is necessary to improve aspects related to the privacy of patients and the awareness and training of the interdisciplinary team in interpersonal communication. Post‐loss follow‐up is recommended to assess individual needs, thus facilitating an optimal approach to ease the grieving process. Relevance to clinical practice During the prenatal diagnosis, the existence of a fetal anomaly is emphasized, but support and follow up of the mother may be neglected; therefore, exhaustive knowledge about the obstetric history, the state of health and the expectations of patients is as important as a multidisciplinary team trained in counseling strategies and with a comprehensive care plan that covers all areas, especially those that control maternal emotions.

ResumoO presente estudo teve por objetivo compreender as repercussões da morte do fi lho na conjugalidade dos genitores e como a espiritualidade pode interferir nesse processo. Trata-se de um estudo de caso coletivo, de corte transversal e qualitativo. Participaram cinco casais heterossexuais, praticantes de alguma religião e que haviam perdido um fi lho. Os participantes foram entrevistados individualmente e em casal, totalizando 15 entrevistas. Os dados foram submetidos à técnica de análise de conteúdo e organizados em eixos temáticos. Notou-se que a morte do fi lho despertou tanto a rejeição do parceiro em alguns casos/momentos, como maior intimidade. Considerar a conjugalidade é, portanto, atentar-se também para os elementos individuais e as necessidades de cada membro da díade. A espiritualidade foi um recurso encontrado diante do escasso acesso a um apoio psicológico estruturado.Palavras chaves: Conjugalidade, morte, espiritualidade. Repercussions of the Death of his Son in the Marital Dynamics of Religious Couples AbstractThis study aimed to understand the impact of some children's death in parent's marital and how to the spirituality can interfer in this process. It is an exploratory, cross-sectional and qualitative research. We interviewed fi ve heterosexual couples who practice some religion and lost a child. The participants were interviewed individually and with their partner, totaling 15 interviews. All the data were passing to the technique of content analysis and organized into themes. It was noted that there children's death created both the rejection of the partner in some instances/moments, and more intimacy in others. Consider the marital relationship is therefore also pay attention to the individual elements and the needs of each member of the dyad. The spirituality was a feature found in face of limited access to a structured psychological support.

Objective: To compare coping strategies for congenital abnormalities pre-natal diagnosis of viable and nonviable fetuses. Methods: Quantitative cross-sectional study of 120 pregnant women, conducted in a center of excellence of fetal medicine, from January to December, 2014. Data were obtained through the following: semi-structured interviews which included socio-demographic information, personal and obstetrics history, and use of the coping strategies inventory. The tests used to compare categorical variations between viable and non-viable malformations were the chi-squared test, and Fisher's exact test or likelihood ratios. Student's t-test was used for continuous variables, and when necessary, it the Analysis of Variance was used. Results: There were significant differences in the self-control strategy between pregnant women diagnosed with a non-viable fetus compared to those diagnosed with a viable fetus. Conclusion: Pregnant women diagnosed with a non-viable fetal anomaly presented a greater tendency to use the self-control strategy than those diagnosed with a viable fetus. ResumoObjetivo: Comparar modos de enfrentamento mediante diagnóstico pré-natal de anomalia fetal viável e inviável. Métodos: Estudo transversal de análise quantitativa em 120 gestantes realizado em centro de referência de medicina fetal, de janeiro a dezembro de 2014. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista semiestruturada contendo características sociodemográficas; antecedentes pessoais e obstétricos; e aplicação do inventário de estratégias de enfrentamento de coping. Teste qui quadrado, teste exato de Fisher ou razão de verossimilhança foram utilizados para comparar variáveis categóricas entre malformação viável e inviável. O teste t de Student foi usado para variáveis contínuas e quando necessária, foi aplicada a Análise de Variância. Resultados: Houve diferença significativa da estratégia autocontrole entre as gestantes com diagnóstico de inviabilidade fetal e as com fetos viáveis. Conclusão: As gestantes com diagnóstico de anomalia fetal inviável apresentaram maior tendência à estratégia de autocontrole que as com feto viável.
