Background and Aim: Cattle are the main source of meat in Benin. To improve the attitudes and practices of cattle breeders in relation to bovine brucellosis, a study has been carried out in Benin according to different agroecological zones. This study aimed to assess farmers’ knowledge and practices concerning bovine brucellosis to generate essential information for control programs and public health interventions. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from February to May 2022, during which 608 farmers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire that provided information on socioeconomic characteristics, knowledge, and practices related to bovine brucellosis. Analysis of variance , Poisson regression, and the proportion comparison test were used to compare these characteristics in the different agroecological zones. At the end of the surveys, three distinct and homogeneous groups of perceptions (hierarchical classification of Multiple Correspondence Analysis components of R software) of bovine brucellosis were identified (these groups only consider farmers who declared knowledge of the disease). Groups were formed by applying the multiple correspondence analysis function of the FactoMineR library in R software, followed by a hierarchical ascending classification using the hierarchical clustering on principal component function of the same software (Agrocampus Rennes, France). Results: Only 38% of respondents were aware of brucellosis. Knowledge of brucellosis was not related to sex or education level but was higher among farmers in agroecological Zones 1 and 4. Ethnic Dendi herders (62.16%) had better knowledge of the disease than those from other sociolinguistic groups (Somba: 50%, Fulani: 40.91%, Baribas: 26.97%, and others: 8.82%). Reduced milk production (98.29%), presence of hygroma (87.18%), and abortion (56.84%) are the main signs reported by herders familiar with the disease. All three groups had good knowledge of the disease and its zoonotic nature. Groups 1 (96% of breeders) and 2 (2.14%) were aware of the risk factors (contact with affected animals, the consumption of raw milk, the handling of runts, and reproductive rejection). In the case of Brucella, they prefer to treat animals rather than sell them and use both traditional and modern medicines. Group 3 (1.71%) did not know the risk factors and preferred to sell animals in the event of illness. Conclusion: Pastoralists need to be made aware of the mode of transmission of bovine brucellosis, its clinical manifestations, its impact on animal health, and the zoonotic nature of the disease (impact on public health) so that bovine brucellosis can be rapidly detected in herds. L’utilisation de la biomasse des résidus de cultures présents sur les exploitations agricoles après les récoltes est importante pour alimenter les animaux durant la saison sèche. La présente étude vise d’une part à estimer la biomasse des résidus au champ, et d’autre part à analyser la capacité de charge qui en résulte dans l’Ouémé Supérieur au Bénin. Des enquêtes ont été réalisées auprès d’agriculteurs et d’éleveurs, ainsi que des mesures de biomasses de résidus. Trois cents éleveurs ont été interrogés sur l’importance, la durée d’utilisation et les modes d’accès aux résidus. Puis, 350 placettes de 5 × 5 m ont été installées dans une sélection de champs, dont 175 en 2020 et 175 en 2021. Les résultats montrent que les quantités de résidus disponibles à l’hectare varient selon les cultures et les années. En 2020, les quantités mesurées sont les suivantes : 5,3 t de Matière Sèche/ha pour le maïs ; 6,7 t MS/ha pour le sorgho ; 3,4 t MS/ha pour le riz ; 2,3 t MS/ha pour le niébé ; 2,0 t MS/ha pour le soja ; 1,0 t MS/ha pour l’arachide ; 1,0 t MS/ha pour le voandzou. En 2021 : 4,4 t MS/ha pour le maïs ; 5,3 t MS/ha pour le sorgho ; 3,2 t MS/ha pour le riz ; 2,1 t MS/ha pour le niébé ; 2,0 t MS/ha pour le soja ; 1,1 t MS/ha pour l’arachide ; 1,1 t MS/ha pour le voandzou. Le bilan entre la capacité de charge calculée à partir des résidus et la charge animale réelle est négatif sur les deux années d’étude. Les résidus ont couvert potentiellement 77 % (2020) et 66 % (2021) des besoins alimentaires du bétail entre décembre et février. La prise en compte de ces résultats dans l’élaboration des politiques agricoles et pastorales contribuerait à mieux gérer l’ensemble des ressources fourragères disponibles pour le bétail.

Climate Variability in the Sudanian Zone of Côte d’Ivoire: Weather Observations, Perceptions, and Adaptation Strategies of Farmers

Located in the extreme north of Côte d’Ivoire, the Sudanian zone is an area where 95% of the population depends on agricultural activities, particularly rain-fed agriculture. Given the serious threats that climate variability poses to food security and household incomes, it is important to understand the evolution of climate variables and their impacts on crops, perceptions, and adaptation measures taken by farmers. To do this, various statistical analyses were conducted using rainfall and temperature data from 1987 to 2018. These analyses were coupled with a survey of 287 farmers. The results showed a strong variability of precipitation marked by the succession of deficit and surplus periods with a return to wetter conditions since 2008. At the same time, an increase in temperature was observed. These phenomena have been perceived by farmers. Thus, to cope with the adverse effects of climate variability, farmers have developed numerous adaptation strategies that include the use of organic manure, agroforestry, changing planting dates, and introducing new crops, notably cashews.
