OBJECTIVE:To characterize the integration of phytotherapy in primary health care in Brazil. METHODS:Journal articles and theses and dissertations were searched for in the following databases: SciELO, Lilacs, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Theses Portal Capes, between January 1988 and March 2013. We analyzed 53 original studies on actions, programs, acceptance and use of phytotherapy and medicinal plants in the Brazilian Unified Health System. Bibliometric data, characteristics of the actions/programs, places and subjects involved and type and focus of the selected studies were analyzed. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS:Over the past 25 years, there was a small increase in scientific production on actions/programs developed in primary care. Including phytotherapy in primary care services encourages interaction between health care users and professionals. It also contributes to the socialization of scientific research and the development of a critical vision about the use of phytotherapy and plant medicine, not only on the part of professionals but also of the population.

Recentemente, a prática da fitoterapia, tornou a atrair interesses, tanto de Governos, que tem adotado políticas de promoção dessa prática, como da indústria farmacêutica, que busca obter novos produtos de ação efetiva e com menos efeitos colaterais. O objetivo do presente artigo é avaliar a relação que os profissionais da saúde no Brasil têm estabelecido com a fitoterapia nos últimos 10 anos. Recientemente, la práctica de la fitoterapia, volvió a atraer intereses, tanto de gobiernos, que ha adoptado políticas de promoción de esa práctica, como de la industria farmacéutica, que busca obtener nuevos productos de acción efectiva y con menos efectos colaterales. El objetivo del presente artículo es evaluar la relación que los profesionales de la salud en Brasil han establecido con la fitoterapia en los últimos 10 años. Es posible notar que la fitoterapia necesita ser reforzada en la formación y en la práctica de los profesionales de la salud, de modo que éstos puedan ofrecer una atención más efectiva a su clientela en este tópico. pAlAbrAs clAve: Plantas medicinales, salud Pública, medicina tradicionalAbstrAct -The use of plants in the treatment of diseases is historically ancient, following the whole history of humanity; however, the development of the synthetic products industry made this knowledge and practice lose their importance for modern medicine. Recently, phytotherapy has become an attractive practice, both for the Government, which has adopted policies to promote it, and for the pharmaceutical industry, which aims at new products with effective action and fewer side effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship that has been established between Brazilian health professionals and phytotherapy in the last 10 years. It was possible to observe that phytotherapy needs to be strengthened in the training and practice of health professionals so that they can provide a more efficient service to their patients.

ResumoIntrodução: Em um cenário de expansão das práticas integrativas e complementares em saúde no Brasil, são escassos os estudos relacionados ao uso da fitoterapia em Odontologia. Objetivo: Investigar os conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas do Cirurgião-Dentista sobre a fitoterapia na prática clínica. Material e método: Foi realizado um estudo transversal com um grupo de 105 Cirurgiões-Dentistas, no exercício clínico da Odontologia dos serviços público e privado, do município de Anápolis-GO (taxa de resposta de 52,5% dos 200 profissionais convidados), que responderam um questionário. Resultado: Cerca de 16% dos respondentes afirmaram que tiveram embasamento teórico acerca da fitoterapia e, destes, metade relatou ter tido este embasamento na Graduação. Embora mais da metade dos Cirurgiões-Dentistas (61,9%) tenha considerado viável a inserção dos fitoterápicos na prática clínica, poucos relataram prescrevê-los (12,4%) ou questionarem, durante a consulta, se os pacientes faziam uso de fitoterápicos (36,2%). Quanto à opinião sobre os fatores que dificultam a inserção dos fitoterápicos no âmbito da Odontologia, os mais citados foram o desconhecimento, a ausência de pesquisas e a falta de divulgação. Embora a maioria desconhecesse a legislação a respeito do tema, este conhecimento foi associado ao uso de fitoterapia na prática clínica (p<0,05). Conclusão: Os Cirurgiões-Dentistas do município pesquisado apresentaram deficiências no conhecimento, pouca utilização e atitudes favoráveis acerca do uso da fitoterapia na prática clínica, sendo necessária uma reorientação na formação acadêmica e profissional, para que haja suporte apropriado para a sua utilização.Descritores: Fitoterapia; odontologia; serviços de saúde; serviços de saúde bucal. AbstractIntroduction: Despite the expansion of complementary and integrative health practices in Brazil, there are few studies related to the use of phytotherapy in dentistry. Objective: To investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of dentists on phytotherapy in clinical practice. Material and method: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a group of 105 dentists working as clinicians in the public and private service in the city of Anápolis-GO (response rate = 52.5% of the 200 professionals invited) who answered a questionnaire. Result: About 16% of respondents said they had theoretical background about phytotherapy and half of them reported having had this subject during the undergraduate programe. Although more than half of dentists (61.9%) have considered that the insertion of phytotherapy in clinical practice is feasible, only a few reported prescribing them (12.4%), or questioning, during the consultation, if their patients were having phytotherapy (36.2%).
