AbstractIntroduction: Despite the expansion of complementary and integrative health practices in Brazil, there are few studies related to the use of phytotherapy in dentistry. Objective: To investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of dentists on phytotherapy in clinical practice. Material and method: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a group of 105 dentists working as clinicians in the public and private service in the city of Anápolis-GO (response rate = 52.5% of the 200 professionals invited) who answered a questionnaire. Result: About 16% of respondents said they had theoretical background about phytotherapy and half of them reported having had this subject during the undergraduate programe. Although more than half of dentists (61.9%) have considered that the insertion of phytotherapy in clinical practice is feasible, only a few reported prescribing them (12.4%), or questioning, during the consultation, if their patients were having phytotherapy (36.2%). Regarding the dentists' opinions regarding the factors that hinder the inclusion of phytotherapy in the dental practice, the most frequent were lack of knowledge, lack of research and lack of information. Most of them had no knowledge on the legislation regarding phytotherapy and this was associated with its use...
Objectives To investigate associations between religiosity, spirituality and quality of life (QoL) in patients with visible sequelae due to head and neck cancer surgery. Subject and Methods Cross‐sectional study in 202 patients in a cancer hospital in Brazil. Psychosocial, demographic and clinical conditions were collected through interviews, clinical examinations and from the medical records. The outcome was QoL, measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy‐Head and Neck (FACT‐HN) and the University of Washington QoL Questionnaire for patients with head and neck cancer (UW‐QOL). The explanatory variables were religiosity (Duke University Religiosity Index—DUREL) and spirituality (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Spiritual Well‐Being Scale—FACIT‐Sp12). Pearson's correlation and linear regression were used for data analysis. Results Religiosity and spirituality were associated with both measures of the patients' QoL. After adjustment, higher scores of QoL (FACT‐HN and UW‐QOL) were found in patients with higher levels of religiosity and of spirituality. Other significant covariates were gender (male), those living with their families, with sequelae not involving the cervical region, longer post‐surgical time and who had no chemotherapy or radiation. Conclusion Religiosity and spirituality were associated with the patients' QoL, regardless of their sociodemographic and cancer‐related clinical conditions and behaviours.
Objective To investigate whether religiosity and spiritual well‐being are associated with appearance concerns among people with visible sequelae due to cancer surgery in the head and neck region. Methods A cross‐sectional study was carried in 202 adult patients in a referral hospital for cancer treatment in Midwest Brazil. Data on sociodemographic, psychosocial and clinical aspects and cancer‐related behaviours were collected through interviews, clinical examination and medical records. The outcome was the patients' appearance concerns (Derriford Appearance Scale—DAS24). The independent explanatory variables were religiosity (Duke University Religiousness Index—DUREL) and spiritual well‐being (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Spiritual Well‐Being Scale—FACIT‐Sp12). Data were analysed using Pearson's chi‐square and Poisson regression. Results Most of the participants were male (76.2%), and mean age was 58.6 years (SD = 11.6). The scores of appearance concerns (DAS24) ranged from 21 to 75 (median = 33.0). In the bivariate analysis, appearance concerns were associated with spiritual well‐being (FACIT‐Sp12), degree of disfigurement and treatment with radiotherapy/chemotherapy. Religiosity (DUREL) was not associated with the outcome. In the adjusted regression model, a lower prevalence of appearance concerns was found among patients with higher levels of spiritual well‐being (PR = 0.86; CI = 0.79‐0.94), males (PR = 0.87; CI = 0.79‐0.95), those with lower degrees of disfigurement (PR = 0.89; CI = 0.82‐0.98) and those who had no treatment with radiotherapy/chemotherapy (PR = 0.83; CI = 0.72‐0.94). Conclusion High spiritual well‐being was independently associated with lower levels of appearance concerns in people with visible sequelae due to cancer surgery in the head and neck region. Understanding the role of this psychosocial determinant may help in the coping process.
