Article history Pharmacological resistance to synthetic anthelmintic drugs is an important barrier to the control of animal parasites. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic action of the hydroalcoholic extract of banana bracts (HEB) at 10%. Hatch test and larval migration inhibition test (LMI) were performed. Additionally, the total content of polyphenols, condensed tannins, and flavonoids was determined, along with the antioxidant activity of HEB. In relation to bovine species, HEB at a concentration of 2.5 mg mL-1 inhibited hatchability of nematode larvae by 88%. The LMI indicated 67.56% inhibition with 5 mg mL-1 HEB. However, in sheep, HEB did not show an influence in either tests. The HEB (10 mg mL-1) had 0.38 mg EAG g-1 of total polyphenols, 372.70 mg EAT g-1 tannins, 0.42 mg RE g-1 flavonoids, and presented antioxidant activity at 43.03% with IC50 corresponding to 0.2765 mg mL-1. Thus, HEB presents anthelmintic potential in vitro, for the parasitologic control in cattle, in addition to demonstrating antioxidant activity. These results are particularly important for agroecological, organic, and biodynamic systems of animal production, considering that the use of synthetic parasiticides is not allowed in these systems.

SUMMARY The use of medicinal plants as a therapeutic method in the control of diseases has been increasing in animal production. In the case of small ruminants, the endoparasitic disease is a major concern, since they are considered the greater sanitary problem, especially when considering the phenomenon of parasite resistance to the medicines used. Therefore, the development of alternative methods of endoparasitary control in goats and sheep has become a pressing need. The use of plants to control endoparasites can reduce the use of chemical inputs, making more environmentally sustainable livestock, minimizing the occurrence of parasitic resistance to conventional medicines and contributing to the reduction of production costs. In this sense, several studies have been carried out in order to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo activity of plants with anthelmintic potential. However, despite the potentiality found in many studies, the results are sometimes contradictory or do not replicate in vivo the same efficacy obtained in the in vitro assays. Another relevant aspect is the low utilization of the lethality and toxicity tests, which are indispensable so that the knowledge can be spread and applied by the producers in their herds. Thus, this review aims to provide the results from studies carried out in Brazil with extract of plants with potential for control of parasitic disease in goats and sheep, describing the main evaluated plants species, mechanisms of action, preparation forms and tests of efficacy, toxicity, and lethality.

A atividade pecuária no Brasil é basicamente representada pelo sistema pastoril. No entanto as adversidades edafoclimáticas promovem uma falta de uniformidade na oferta e qualidade de forragem, acarretando na maior intensificação dos sistemas de produção. A busca por alternativas de alimentação visando à melhoria no desempenho animal, tem sido objeto de muitas pesquisas, como o uso de forrageiras adaptadas a determinadas condições ambientais. Geralmente, estas plantas podem apresentar compostos que alteram a produção animal, seja positiva ou negativamente. Dentre estes compostos, destacam-se os taninos condensados (TC) que são compostos polifenólicos oriundos do metabolismo secundário das plantas. Em concentrações elevadas (6 a 12 % da matéria seca (MS)) eles reduzem a palatabilidade, o consumo, atividade enzimática, digestibilidade de proteínas e carboidratos, e consequentemente reduzem o desempenho animal. Porém, quando esse consumo é médio ou baixo (2 a 5 % da MS), permite uma eficiência na utilização da proteína dietética, formando complexos através de ligações de hidrogênio, assim, acaba protegendo a proteína da degradação ruminal, aumentando o fluxo de aminoácidos para absorção intestinal. Além de melhorar a eficiência proteica da dieta, pode-se dizer que os TC reduzem a produção de metano, e trazem benefícios no controle de parasitas gastrintestinais, melhora o desempenho reprodutivo, desenvolvimento fetal, a resposta do sistema imunológico, as concentrações séricas de hormônio, a produção de lã e lactação. O uso de plantas com baixa concentração de taninos condensados pode ser uma boa estratégia nutricional para ruminantes, desde que seu mecanismo de ação sobre o metabolismo proteico seja considerado. Esta revisão tem como objetivo, trazer algumas respostas ao uso de TC na alimentação de ruminantes, com o foco nas alterações da fisiologia digestiva do rúmen, que se torna responsável pelas consequências secundárias dos taninos sobre a produção animal.
