“…In this regard, pentoxifylline has been found to be clinically efficacious in a number of inflammatory pathologies characterized by increased TNFα production including alcoholic liver disease and rheumatoid arthritis (Queiroz-Junior et al, 2013; Sidhu et al, 2012; Zaitone et al, 2011). Since TNFα is a key mediator of pulmonary toxicity induced by vesicants (Sunil et al, 2011a), we tested the ability of pentoxifylline to mitigate NM-induced lung toxicity.…”

“…Although downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines seems to be important for the protection or attenuation of injury it is possible that mitochondria were already highly damaged by the ischemic process. Previous studies have shown a beneficial effect of 50 mg/kg PTX supplementation to correct the overproduction of oxidative stress and inflammatory indices in IR-induced spinal cord injury and fatty liver disease 33,34 and a preventive effect for 400 mg/kg NAC was demonstrated in the rat organs against the oxidative damages. 35,36 Results of this study also demonstrated that beneficial effects of PTX were more than NAC.…”

“…In a study of PTX and melatonin in combination with pioglitazone in a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) rat model, Zaitone et al (2011) documented that PTX reduced hepatic MDA and increased hepatic glutathione contents. It also induced a significant reduction in serum ALT activity.…”
