The study aims at composing a picture book using the thematic-integrative approach that might improve the reading comprehension skills of the Grade IV students. With regards to the conduct of the study, the initiative that has been taken is research and development (R&D). Within this initiative, product development refers to the model that has been developed by Borg & Gall. Then, throughout the conduct of the study, 19 students had been involved as the field subjects and the data had been gathered by means of guided interview technique, observation, product fitness questionnaire, teacher and student response questionnaire and reading comprehension skills test. Furthermore, the product effectiveness had been tested by means of the quasi-experiment method and the data had been analysed by using the paired sample t-test with a significant rate of 0.05. The results of the study show that: (1) the thematic-integrative-based picture book has been fit for implementation as learning media based on the “Very Good” category that has been assigned by the media expert and the “Good” category by the material expert; and (2) the thematic-integrative-based picture book has been effective in improving the reading comprehension skills as having been confirmed by the improvement from the mean score 72.11 in the pre-test results into the mean score 81.63 in the post-test results. The improvement in the students’ reading comprehension skills has been shown by the significance value (p) 0.000. In addition, based on the paired-sample t-test it is found that p < 0.05. This value indicates that the thematic-integrative-based picture book has a significant influence on the improvement of reading comprehension skills among Grade IV students.

Character Values In The Thematic Learning Of Elementary School

The study aims at identifying the character values that appear in the thematic learning of elementary school. The approach that has been adopted in conducting the research is the quantitative approach. The subjects who had been selected using random cluster sampling were 180 students from the elementary schools located in the Province of Yogyakarta Special Region. The study results show that the instrument that has been administered to identify the character values has a high value of content validity. The components that have been established are namely honest, disciplined, responsible, polite, caring, and self-confident.

The aims of the research are (1) to develop a convertible book based on a scientific approach to improving the conceptual understanding and care-for-environmental character, (2) to reveal the effectiveness of the developed convertible book to improve the conceptual understanding and care-for-environmental character of grade IV students of elementary schools in Moga subdistrict., Pemalang Regency, Indonesian Country. The research uses Research and Development (R&D) model with reference to product development by Borg & Gall. The subject of research are students of elementary schools in Moga subdistrict. The validity of the developed convertible book was analyzed by converting to five quantitative criteria. The effectiveness of the convertible book in improving the conceptual understanding and care-for environmental character was analyzed by N-gain score, t-test, and MANOVA at the significance level of 0.05. The result of the research showed that the develop convertible book fulfilled the feasibility criteria according to the validation by material expert and media expert, teachers' responses and students' response which was in a good of very feasible category. The convertible book was effective to improve the students' conceptual understanding and care-for-environmental character. The result of the t-test at sig. 0.05 showed the effect of the use of the media and test MANOVA there is significant effect between class experiment and class control at 0.00.
