The incidence number of HIV/AIDS is the most worrying case globally, and the number keeps increasing. The highest risk factor affecting adolescents to have HIV/AIDS is lack of information. Thus, it is necessary to provide proper health education on HIV/AIDS using the small group discussion method. This study aims to determine the effect of HIV/AIDS education using the small group discussion method on teenagers' HIV/AIDS prevention knowledge. This research used a pre-experimental design, no control one-group pretest-posttest design. There were 55 respondents as samples obtained by using simple random sampling. They were divided into five small groups. Each group was provided the identical material, namely HIV and its prevention, for three hours with two sessions. The first session lasted for two hours consisted of knowledge sharing based on trigger cases. The second session lasted for one hour consisted of continuing and reviewing the material given in the first session. A questionnaire was handed out to collect adolescent knowledge about HIV/AIDS and analyzed the data using paired t-test. The result showed that adolescent knowledge scores on HIV/AIDS increased after being provided with health education on HIV/AIDS. The paired t-test value of a knowledge is p = 0.000 (p-value<0.05). The implication in this study is that providing health education on HIV/AIDS using the small group discussion method has proven to be effective in expanding adolescent knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention.

One characteristic of adolescents is their tendency to share information, tell stories, and gather with their peers. They may experience the negative effects of these habits when they do not have adequate life skills, especially in terms of sexuality. On the other hand, these activities present an opportunity for health promotion through peer-based approaches or peer counseling. The goal is to know the effects of peer counseling methods as media of information to increase adolescents’ knowledge and attitude regarding sexual problems. The study used a quasi-experimental approach with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 17 respondents between 15-24 years old living in Banguntapan, Bantul, Yogyakarta who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected with the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. The results showed that there was a difference in the average knowledge level (p = 0.021) and attitudes (p = 0.000) of respondents related to sexuality before and after receiving peer counseling training. Methods and media used in delivering health information to adolescents should be diversified in schools, in the community, and in health services to generate interest in accessing and heeding appropriate health information. Terjadi peningkatan jumlah remaja usia 15-24 di dunia yang terinfeksi HIV. Pengetahuan komprehensif tentang HIV-AIDS menjadi aspek yang sangat penting dalam meningkatkan akses pelayanan HIV dan perubahan perilaku berisiko. Penting untuk mengadakan pencegahan dini berupa edukasi kesehatan agar kasus HIV/AIDS dapat ditekan. Edukasi berupa pelatihan konselor sebaya HIV/ AIDS belum pernah dibina di SMPN 35 Padang, sehingga perlu diadakannya pelatihan konselor sebaya HIV/ AIDS. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan konselor sebaya terkait HIV/ AIDS, sehingga mampu menjadi konselor sebaya bagi teman-temannya. Kegiatan diadakan di SMP Negeri 35 Padang yakni di Seberang Padang Kecamatan Padang Selatan Kota Padang. Metode yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini adalah bimbingan dan penyuluhan, brainstorming, permainan, latihan menggunakan media promosi kesehatan, dan diskusi kelompok. Pelatihan diikuti oleh 23 orang peserta konselor sebaya. Perolehan hasil kegiatan yaitu adanya peningkatan pengetahuan peserta pelatihan konselor sebaya pencegahan HIV/ AIDS SMPN 35 Padang sebelum (pre-test) rata-rata tingkat pengetahuan 6,57 dan setelah pelatihan (post-test) rata-rata tingkat pengetahuan 9,13 dengan nilai p-value adalah 0,000. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa edukasi melalui pelatihan konselor sebaya memang tepat untuk diterapkan dalam rangka meningkatkan pengetahuan konselor sebaya terakit HIV/AIDS. Diharapkan konselor sebaya dapat menjalankan perannya sebagai konselor sebaya memberikan informasi pencegahan penularan HIV/AIDS kepada teman-temannya di sekolah.
