Pelvimetry of multiparous Nellore cows in the cycling and early puerperal stages

Abstract: Pelvis is an osteoligamentous complex, which is classified as dolichopellic in ruminants. Impairments linked to incompatibility of pelvic canal and fetal size is directly related to pelvic anatomy and disposition. Heritability of pelvic area characteristics varies from moderate to high, demonstrating its importance for animal selection. Pelvimetry can be performed through direct and indirect methods that were accessed in this study aiming to establish a correlation between internal and external pelvic dimensio… Show more

“…were not recommended on the ground of parturition problems associated with narrow rump width (Cue et al, 1990;Patterson & Herring, 2017). Strong significant correlations were determined between internal and external pelvic dimensions of bulls and cows (Coopman et al, 2003;Silva et al, 2019), which indicated for utility of external pelvic morphometry as alternative measures to internal pelvic morphometry. The present study had reported age-wise changes in dimensions of PLT in breeding bulls.…”

“…Like the present investigation, pelvic traits were reported to be influenced by age, body weight, gender, breed etc. (Morrison et al, 1986;Coopman et al, 2003;Silva et al, 2019) that of Frieswal bulls. The magnitude of correlations among external pelvic measures ranged from 0.66 to 0.96 in Frieswal bulls and almost similar magnitude of associations (0.62 to 0.75) were reported in Belgian Blue bulls (Coopman et al, 2003).…”

“…Ruminant pelvis is a multiple functional osteoligamentous complex structure (Oliveira et al 2003;Silva et al 2019). It encircles the birth canal as an osseous ring and limit its expansion (Tyczka 1998).…”

“…Pelvimetry means the measurement of the dimensions and capacity of the pelvis, either externally, internally, or both [4]. The pelvic sizes of cows vary according to their reproductive stage [5,6]. Close correlations between calving ease and pelvic measurements and its shape *Address correspondence to this author at the College of Applied and Health Sciences, A'Sharqiyah University, P.O.…”
