Pediatric Osteosarcoma: A Single Institution’s Experience

Abstract: Survival in our patient cohort tended to be at the lower end of the spectrum reported by other contemporary treatment centers of excellence or Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databases probably because of the large number of African American patients with associated poor socioeconomic status. Future studies should be conducted to explore biological and nonbiological factors that may affect the prognosis in this disease.

“…It was reported that the incidence of osteosarcoma is approximately 1-3/1000,000 individuals per year worldwide (1,2). Although combined therapy including surgical methods and multi-chemotherapy have achieved great progress, the overall five-year survival rate of osteosarcoma patients remains low (3,4). Therefore, discovering new targets is urgent for clinical and basic research.…”

“…Pulmonary metastasis occurs in early stages of osteosarcoma, causing high mortality. Osteosarcoma originates from the mesenchymal tissue, and is characterized by spindle stromal cells and osteoid tissue (Vijayakumar et al, 2014;Trosman and Krakovitz, 2015). No obvious clinical symptoms occur in the early phase of osteosarcoma.…”

“…Most previous studies reported a much lower 5-year OS both in children with Osteosarcoma (31.7%-72.6%) and EWS (19%-70%). 2,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] Approximately 30% of our patients with MBT experienced metastasis. More than 60% of metastases occurred in the first 3 months from diagnosis and were associated with higher mortality.…”
