PCR-Based Detection of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases (bla CTX-M-1 and bla TEM ) in Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Pigs in North Eastern India (Mizoram)

Abstract: Cephalosporins are major antimicrobials used to treat serious infections. However, their effectiveness is being compromised by the emergence of extendedspectrum b-lactamases (ESBLs). A total of 138 enteric bacteria were isolated from 53 faecal samples of pigs collected from different districts of Mizoram, of which 102 (73.91 %) were Escherichia coli, 26 (18.84 %) were Salmonella spp. and 10 (7.25 %) were Klebsiella pneumoniae. Phenotypic confirmatory test (Double Discs Synergy Test) showed that 8 (5.80 %) E. c… Show more

“…Some combinations of β-lactam resistance encoding genes were detected significantly. In contrast to our results, Lalzampuia et al, [43] found that for eight isolates, 7 harbored CTX-M-1 gene and/or TEM gene. The CTX-M and TEM were the most common gene combinations (33.33%) in E. coli isolates from broiler farms in the Philippines [44].…”

“…Detection of bla CTX-M-1 and bla TEM in K . pneumoniae isolated from pigs in north eastern India has been reported previously [25]. In a previous study, Roy et al has demonstrated the high prevalence of bla TEM , bla SHV, bla CTX-M and bla QNR genes in pathogenic K .…”

“…Lalzampuia et al . [ 11 ] reported from the same laboratory that none of the 102 E. coli isolates from pigs in Mizoram were carrying bla TEM gene. The bla TEM genes also have a tendency to mutate and secrete enzymes with extended spectrum of activity, which could have accounted for the high resistance to ampicillin in the population studied [ 12 ].…”
