PCNA Expression In Epithelial Linings Of Odontogenic Cysts

Abstract: Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) is one of the several markers of cellular proliferation. Epithelial proliferations play a significant role in the behaviour of odontogenic lesions. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the distribution of PCNA expression within the epithelial linings of odontogenic cysts. A total of 49 cases of odontogenic cysts consisting of 18 radicular cysts, 16 dentigerous cysts, 15 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) was studied. All tissues were processed routinely … Show more

“…Most studies have focused on the evaluation of the proliferative activity in the epithelial component of the odontogeniclesions[1214] but role of mesenchyme cannot be underestimated. Only few studies have focused on the importance of epithelial-mesenchymalinteractions for the expansion of odontogenic cysts.…”

“…Inflammation has a puzzling effect on the epithelium of OKC and remains a subject of controversy, with contradictory results being portrayed. [45] However, we suggest that inflammation definitely play role in enhancing the aggressive behavior of OKC by increasing its proliferative potential. So, it requires more aggressive treatment protocol than classical OKC requires.…”

“…In present study, OKC and DC showed varying degree of inflammation from mild to severe. Several authors stated that inflammation in the connective tissue stroma of the OKC and DC is seen in majority of cases,[5101112] but in contrary to this Kolár, et al . [13] observed that fibrous cyst wall usually lacks inflammatory cell infiltrate.…”

“…Among these, monoclonal antibodies against proliferating cellular nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67 are probably the most widely used. [5] PCNA expression may be used as a marker of cell proliferation because the cell remains for a longer time in the G1/S phase during proliferation. As PCNA is one of the several markers of cellular proliferation, high PCNA activity is indicative of higher proliferative activity.…”
