A molecular insight into the role of inflammation in the behavior and pathogenesis of odontogenic cysts

Abstract: Background:Although, odontogenickeratocyst (OKC) and dentigerous cyst (DC) are considered asdevelopmental cysts inflammation has been seen in its connective tissue wall. Inflammation is seen to alter the epithelial lining of both OKC and DC butwhether it plays in altering the behavior of these cysts is not fully understood.Aim:The present study is conducted with the help of molecular marker proliferating cellular nuclear antigen (PCNA) to assess the proliferative activity of OKC and DC and to further evaluate … Show more

“…We found overall low expression of Ki67 in DC but the presence of inflammation correlated with higher expression of Ki67. A similar result was found by Singh HP et al [9] using PCNA. Although a dentigerous cyst is categorized as a developmental cyst, studies have shown the initial inflammatory response as the initiator of a dentigerous cyst.…”

“…Gadbail et al [3], and Singh et al [9] have also reported a higher suprabasal cell proliferation rate of the Odontogenic Keratocyst. Studies have found that OKC shows higher expression of the anti-apoptotic molecule bcl2 throughout the thickness of the lining epithelium.…”

“…In spite of being classified as developmental lesions, the majority of odontogenic keratocysts and dentigerous cysts are characterised by the presence of chronic inflammatory infiltrate in the connective tissues. 23 Furthermore, the inflammatory reaction is also observed in ameloblastomas. 1 In this study, we used a primer designed to detect EBV-DNA by targeting EBNA-1 segment.…”

“… 6 Compared to classical OKC and dentigerous cyst (DC), inflamed OKC and inflamed DC showed significantly higher proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression. 7 The thicker lining epithelia was also found in OKC with focal inflammation sites than those without inflammation. 8 Therefore, inflammation might be closely related with the focal proliferation of epithelia.…”
