Patterns of Food Consumption and Production of Mountainous Community in Sinjai District, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia

Abstract: Food availability of one area affects its community food consumption patterns. The area will use its natural resources to satisfy all needs of its society. This study aimed to explain the patterns of consumption and production of food in a mountainous area. This research is a descriptive study using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. “…The most effective strategy to mitigate such biases involves employing a diverse array of methods to measure food consumption [ 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Triangulation, the simultaneous use of multiple methods to observe a phenomenon, substantially enhances the credibility and validity of findings [ 28 , 29 ]. It is important to note that under-reporting tends to be more common when recalling food intake, especially among individuals with higher body mass indexes, but over-reporting is not uncommon either [ 30 ].…”

“…Different from agrarian societies (upland and lake areas), whose food availability and affordability relied upon local food production combined with distribution from the nearest centers (Ahmad et al, 2017;Ali, et el., 2017), coastal and small island communities rely much more on food supplied through market distribution because of their inability to produce food independently (Sulaiman, Ali, & Salman, 2018). One result is that an individual's purchasing power greatly determines their ability to obtain adequate and good-quality food.…”

“…This phenomenon brings vulnerability to sustainable production and consumption. The unsustainable food production and consumption brought a global catastrophe (Ahmad, Rahmadanih, & Ali, 2017;Brizga, Mishchuk, & Golubovska-Onisimova, 2014). Throughout history, human population has experienced a shortage of food production.…”

“…Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) have become an important topic both concerning policy and research agenda for academics over the last ten years (Geels, Mcmeekin, Mylan, & Southerton, 2015). Based on the above description, it is necessary to research to assess and explain in depth about food production and consumption patterns of people in coastal areas which are different from that in upland and lake areas (Ahmad et al, 2017;Ali, et el., 2017).…”
