Patterns of brain atrophy in frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia

Abstract: Although FTD and SemD are associated with different overall patterns of brain atrophy, regions of gray matter tissue loss in the orbital frontal, insular, and anterior cingulate regions are present in both groups. The authors suggest that pathology in the areas of atrophy associated with both FTD and SemD may underlie some the behavioral symptoms seen in the two disorders.

“…Some studies have shown atrophy in other brain regions, notably the frontal lobes [39,49,64,69] and the amygdala [4,7,22,39,49,64,78]. It is worth noting that, with the evolution of the disease, SD patients develop executive dysfunction and behavioural symptoms [18], in accordance with the role of the frontal lobes in behaviour regulation.…”

“…In sum, only a few studies have applied the VBM procedure in SD [4,25,26,29,48,49,64]. Moreover, two of these studies investigated a small group of patients ([48] N = 4;…”

“…However, a number of recent automated image analysis techniques have been applied to study patterns of cerebral atrophy on MRI. One such technique that has been used extensively in various neurodegenerative disorders [9,45], is voxel-based morphometry (VBM). This technique uses unbiased statistics to assess patterns of cerebral atrophy throughout the whole brain in groups of subjects.…”

“…FTLD is both pathologically and clinically heterogeneous [2][3][4][5][6]. Diseases in the FTLD spectrum involve cortical areas that have been implicated in olfactory processing in functional imaging studies of healthy subjects [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] and in human lesion studies [15][16][17][18].…”
