The paper presents the development of the Overlap Muon Track Finder (OMTF) trigger for the CMS experiment at CERN. The transition from the data produced by the physical model to the algorithm suitable for practical implementation is shown. The paper also concentrates on the problems related to the necessity of continuous adaptation of the algorithm to the changing operating conditions of the detector.

The Compact Muon Solenoid Muon system, designed to trigger and identify muons, is based on three different technologies; drift tube (DT) in the barrel region, cathode strip chamber (CSC) in the endcap and resistive plate chambers (RPC) in both the barrel and endcap. The three subsystems, the local muon trigger and the global muon trigger will be described here giving some results obtained during the quality control tests. The chambers installation is now underway; the strategy adopted for the commissioning of the muon system will be described in this paper

on behalf of the CMS collaboration AbstractThe CMS experiment is currently undergoing upgrade of its trigger, including the Level-1 muon trigger. In the barrel-endcap transition region it is necessary to merge data from 3 types of detectors -RPC, DT and CSC. The Overlap Muon Track Finder (OMTF) uses the novelty approach to concentrate and process those data in an uniform manner. The paper presents the algorithm and FPGA firmware implementation of the OMTF and its data transmission system in CMS. The OMTF is subject to significant changes during optimizations based on physical simulations. Therefore a special, high level, parametrized HDL implementation is necessary. ABSTRACT: The CMS experiment Level-1 trigger system is undergoing an upgrade. In the barrelendcap transition region, it is necessary to merge data from 3 types of muon detectors -RPC, DT and CSC. It is foreseen that the OMTF will be subject to significant changes resulting from optimization which will be done with the aid of physics simulations. Therefore, a special, high-level, parameterized HDL implementation is necessary.

Pattern Comparator Trigger (PACT) for the muon system of the CMS experiment

Abstract: The general scheme for the fast, pipelined rst level trigger on high pt muons in the CMS detector at LHC is presented. The prototype PACT system was tested in the high momentum muon beams in the RD5 experiment during 1993/94 runs. The obtained eciency curves are shown.
