Pattern Comparator Trigger (PACT) for the muon system of the CMS experiment

Abstract: The general scheme for the fast, pipelined rst level trigger on high pt muons in the CMS detector at LHC is presented. The prototype PACT system was tested in the high momentum muon beams in the RD5 experiment during 1993/94 runs. The obtained eciency curves are shown.

“…Endcap MTF (only CSC and RPC endcap) In Run 1 (legacy) system, the signal was processed by the muon subtriggers [5][6][7] related to available muon detectors and then combined by the Global Muon Trigger (GMT). In the currently built system proposed for Run 2 and Run 3, the data from muon detectors should be combined as soon as possible in order to provide optimal trigger decision.…”

“…Up to four best (highest p T and quality) muon candidates from each system are selected and sent to the Global Muon Trigger. In the case of RPC hits from all the stations are collected (PACT) [7] and if they are aligned along a possible muon track, a p T value is assigned and the information is sent to the Muon Sorter. It selects the four highest p T muon from the barrel and four from the endcaps and sends them to the Global Muon Trigger (GMT).…”

“…Therefore, GPUs in GPPs servicing two GPs contain a single BRAM block while GPUs in GPPs servicing four GPs contain two BRAM blocks. If non-zero PDF value for the particular GP is produced, it is added to the sum of PDFs (SPDF) for that GP, and the number of fired layers for that GP is increased 8 .…”

“…The trigger design used during the LHC Run-1 utilized detector-specific muon identification algorithms: PACT Pattern Comparator for RPC [8], Drift Tube Track Finder for DT [9] and Cathode Strip Chamber Track Finder [10] for CSC. Unfortunately, none of these solutions may be used to 1 There are two overlap areas, one on each end of the detector 2 In the barrel, there are 5 RPC layers (RB1in, RB1out, RB2in and RB2out, RB3), and three DT layers (MB1, MB2 and MB3) connected.…”
