Algorithm and implementation of muon trigger and data transmission system for barrel-endcap overlap region of the CMS detector

Abstract: on behalf of the CMS collaboration AbstractThe CMS experiment is currently undergoing upgrade of its trigger, including the Level-1 muon trigger. In the barrel-endcap transition region it is necessary to merge data from 3 types of detectors -RPC, DT and CSC. The Overlap Muon Track Finder (OMTF) uses the novelty approach to concentrate and process those data in an uniform manner. The paper presents the algorithm and FPGA firmware implementation of the OMTF and its data transmission system in CMS. The OMTF is su… Show more

“…The track and direction of the muon will be calculated in the FPGA basing on coincident hits from different detector layers. The fast and low latency process of a muons trajectory identification will be based on the muon trajectory processor original concept for the Overlap Muon Track Finder [15], [16] in the CMS muon trigger system [17].…”

“…Through its upgrade, the Level-1 muon triggers moved from a muon detector-based scheme (DT, RPC, and CSC) to a geometry-based system of Muon Track Finders: Barrel (BMTF) [8], Overlap (OMTF) [9], and Endcap (EMTF) [10], covering the pseudorapidity range 0 < |η| < 0.83, 0.83 < |η| < 1.23 and 1.24 < |η| < 2.4, respectively. The goal of the new architecture is to bring in together data from the 3 complementary detector technologies early in the track finding procedure to improve p T resolution.…”
