Patrol Officer Daily Noise Exposure

Abstract: Previous research shows that police officers are at a higher risk for noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Little data exists on the occupational tasks, outside of the firing range, that might lead to the increased risk of NIHL. The current study collected noise dosimetry from patrol officers in a smaller department and a larger department in southern Wisconsin, United States. The noise dosimeters simultaneously measured noise in three virtual dosimeters that had different thresholds, criterion levels, and excha… Show more

“…Night shifts, essential for their duties, disrupts police officers’ circadian rhythms, meal schedules, and sleeping patterns [ 8 ], leading to increased risks of CVD and CVD-related mortality [ 9 11 ]. Exposure to noise and particulate matter [ 12 14 ], especially for traffic police, also contributed to CVD risks [ 15 17 ]. Moreover, emotional stressors, including mental and psychosocial stressors, independently increases the risk of developing CVD [ 18 22 ], as demonstrated by a 2022 meta-analysis across 32 countries, which showed increased risks of ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage in association with emotional stress [ 22 ].…”

“… 1 2 In the Republic of Korea, a high prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder was found among police officers. 3 Besides, police officers are highly likely to be exposed to noise from rooftop work and siren use, 4 as well as to particulate matter. 5 Particularly, police officers frequently work near traffic roads, particles of which increase various health risks.…”

“…The intention to improve the diagnosis of hearing loss in military police officers, Guida, Sousa & Cardoso (2012) and Gilbertsonm & Vosburgh (2015) present the results of the relationship among audiometry findings and otoacoustic emissions that have demonstrated effectiveness in detecting hearing loss induced by noise frames. Finally, Lima et al (2015) discuss the risk of hearing loss development in military police officers, due to the characteristics of their exposure and daily noise levels that exceed regulatory limits.…”
