Patients With Gastroesophageal Reflux: Differences in Esophageal pH-Monitoring Between Patients Undergoing Surgery (Nissen) and Patients Undergoing Medical Treatment

Abstract

The pathologic gastroesophageal reflux (PGER) can be treated medically or surgically [1–6]. To date, there is not an accepted criterion to divide the patients in each category of treatment. Neither the symptoms, manometry, image studies (baritate or isotopic) nor endoscopy lesions alone have achieved this purpose. The introduction of the ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring for 24 h has permited us a more reliable method for the diagnosis of PGE
