Pathological prognostic indicators in cervical cancer with particular reference to patients under the age of 40 years

Abstract: The prcsence of lymph n o d e metastases in patients with cervical cancer is a n important predictor of death a n d recurrence of disease. Lymph node metastases are more c o m m o n in patients with mucus-secreting carcinomas than in w o m e n with pure s q u a m o u s carcinomas e v e n i n what appears. clinically, to b e early stage disease: such neoplasms are more frequent in women u n d e r t h e a g e of 40 years. The recognition of mucus secretion in a carcinoma and the detection of vascular permeation … Show more

“…We wished to study the effect of recent improvements in histological classification, as advocated by Buckley et al (1988). They reported a higher lymph node metastasis rate in adenosquamous cancers, identified by detection of mucous secretion, compared with pure squamous cancers.…”

“…A diagnosis of adenosquamous carcinoma was based on an admixture of both adenocarcinoma and squamous components. Mucus stains were not routinely performed to define so‐called mucus‐secreting squamous carcinoma ( 30 ) . Flow cytometric DNA analysis was performed on paraffin‐embedded tumor tissue.…”

“…Early diagnosis is important because lymph node metastasis is one of the best predictors of poor outcome (Buckley et al , 1988; Elledge and McGuire, 1993). Paradoxically, it has been shown statistically that early diagnosis of breast cancer has not led to a substantial decrease in deaths because most of the cancers diagnosed early would not progress to be life-threatening if left untreated (Bleyer and Welch, 2012).…”
