Past association of fluoride vehicles with caries severity in Australian adolescents

A. John Spencer

Abstract: Clarification of future changes in caries severity depends upon the identification and quantification of factors associated with past changes in caries severity. The present study quantified the association of three fluoride vehicles with caries severity in Australian adolescents between 1965 and 1978. The three fluoride vehicles were fluoridated water supplies, fluoride supplements and fluoride containing dentifrice. All three fluoride vehicles were significantly associated with caries severity over the perio… Show more

“…Place of residence and history of fluoridation have been used to determine the proportion of a child population group's lifetime exposure to fluoridated water . Alternatively, individual residential histories have been used to quantify the percent lifetime exposure to fluoridated water and its association with caries outcomes .…”

“…Place of residence and history of fluoridation have been used to determine the proportion of a child population group's lifetime exposure to fluoridated water . Alternatively, individual residential histories have been used to quantify the percent lifetime exposure to fluoridated water and its association with caries outcomes . This latter approach to calculating exposure to fluoridated water has been used in a large Australian study, the Child Fluoride Study , where individual percent lifetime exposure to water fluoridation was found to be associated with caries even after adjustment for several other factors.…”

“…Relative differences in mean levels of caries experience ranged from 20 percent to 52 percent for DMF, and from 26 percent to 55 percent for dmf. In 1986, an eco-Iogical study that used survey findings from Australian surveys of adolescents conducted between 1965 and 1978 found that water fluoridation made the greatest contribution of several fluoride sources to declines in DMFT during that period (16).…”
