Parenting styles play vital role in development of adult self-esteem, and influence of both mother and father is crucial in this regard. Individual and Cultural differences impede the universal consensus on best parenting style for psychological well-being in later life. Collectivist cultures are believed to practice more authority and less flexibility that negatively affect the self-esteem. Current study followed the correlational survey design to investigate the perception regarding father and mother's parenting styleand self-esteem of young adults.Parental Authority Questionnaire based on Baumrind's parenting typology (Authoritative, Permissive, and Authoritarian) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was administered on 234 participants that were randomly selected from different universities. The sample consists of 86 male and 148 female adults of age 18 to 27 years. Results revealed that participant's perception of parenting style was not affected by participants' gender. Mother's parenting style had no relationship with self-esteem whereas father's parenting style had significant influence on self-esteem development. Authoritarian and authoritative parenting style has positive and negative relationship respectively with the self-esteem in later life.The authoritative parenting style does not cater high level of self-esteem in collectivist culture indicating that the relationship between these variables is not concrete and subject to vary in context of different ethnicities. Authoritarian fathers found to facilitate the development of high self-esteem during adult age while authoritative fathers deter this.

RESUMOPesquisas realizadas em diferentes sociedades acerca das interações entre pais e filhos revelam, com clareza, as fortes relações entre o comportamento dos pais e o desenvolvimento global dos filhos. O presente estudo investigou, com 1.400 adolescentes, as relações existentes entre as práti-cas estilos educativos parentais percebidos e sinais de depressão, autoestima e comportamentos antissociais de adolescentes. Os resultados mostram que a grande maioria dos adolescentes que apresentaram sinais de depressão indicaram alta freqüência de comunicação negativa da parte de seus pais, ausência de regras claras e supervisão e consideram que o modelo parental é inadequado, uma vez que os pais não cumprem as exigências que fazem aos filhos e tem pouco envolvimento. Os jovens que obtiveram escores elevados de autoestima consideram seus pais como bons modelos parentais, uma vez que demonstram alta freqüência de envolvimento e participação na vida dos filhos. Por outro lado, aqueles adolescentes que assinalaram alta freqüência de comportamentos de desobediência aos pais e de comportamentos antissociais na escola também relataram ausência de supervisão e monitoria na dinâmica familiar, bem como baixo escore de envolvimento e alto nível de comunicação parental negativa e coercitiva. Por meio dos dados, conclui-se que os estilos e as práticas educativas positivas estão relacionadas à autoestima elevada, ausência de sinais de depressão e de comportamentos opositores e/ou antissociais. Investir em intervenções preventivas que visem otimizar as práticas educativas de mães e pais é uma estratégia que pode promover melhor dinâmica familiar, autonomia e desenvolvimento psicológico de adolescentes.Palavras-chave: estilos parentais, práticas educativas parentais, autoestima, depressão, família. RESUMOConsiderando-se a importância do autoconceito no bem-estar dos adolescentes, bem como a necessidade de escalas confiáveis que permitam avaliá-lo, o presente estudo tem como objetivos verificar as propriedades psicométricas da Escala de Autoconceito Multidimensional, sua estrutura e consistência interna em uma amostra de adolescentes brasileiros e verificar a invariância fatorial da escala considerando-se o sexo dos adolescentes. Participaram deste estudo 1.588 adolescentes com idades entre 12 e 16 anos, sendo 65,5% meninas. Os resultados indicam que a versão de quatro dimensões (acadêmica, familiar, física e social) e 20 itens da Escala de Autoconceito Multidimensional apresenta, no geral, consistência interna e índices de ajuste adequados em análise fatorial confirmatória para a amostra. Verifica-se também invariância fatorial entre meninos e meninas por meio de análise fatorial confirmatória multigrupo. Palavras-chave: autoconceito; autoestima; adolescentes. ABSTRACT -Psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale in Brazilian adolescentsConsidering the importance of self-concept in the well-being of adolescents, as well as the need for reliable scales that allow its evaluation, the objectives of the present study are to verify the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale-its structure and internal consistency -in a sample of Brazilian adolescents, and to assess the scalar invariance of the scale considering the adolescents' gender. The study included 1,588 adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, with 65.5% being female.The results indicate that the four-dimensional (academic, family, social and physical), 20-item version of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale presents appropriate reliability and fit indices when performing confirmatory factor analysis for the sample. There is also factorial invariance between boys and girls tested with multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Keywords: self-concept; self-esteem; adolescents.
