Parallel Determination of Total Thyroxine and Thyrotropin Concentrations in Diagnosis of Primary Hypothyroidism in the Dog

Abstract: The objective of the work was to verify the validity of parallel determination of total thyroxine (tT 4 ) and thyrotropin (cTSH) concentrations in the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism in the dog. The concentrations of total thyroxine and thyrotropin were determined by chemiluminiscence immunoassay in the serum of a total of 117 dogs: 40 negative controls, 66 dogs with euthyroid sick syndrome and 11 patients with primary hypothyroidism. The average tT 4 concentration in the group of healthy dogs was 25.8 ± 5… Show more

“…As shown, there was an increase in serum cholesterol and creatine kinase as well as a mild azotaemia. Parallel determination of total thyroxine (tT 4 < 12.87nmol/l) and canine thyrotropin (cTSH = 1.9 ng/ml) confirmed hypothyroidism because the low thyroxine associated with high TSH is very consistent with hypothyroidism (Kolevska et al, 2002). Oral supplementation with sodium levothyroxine (Euthyrox; Merck; 10 µg/kg twice daily) was commenced and the bitch made clinical improvement.…”

“…Secondary hypothyroidism occurs in less than 5% of cases (Feldman and Nelson 1996;Rijnberk 1996;Day 1999). Primary hypothyroidism (dysfunction at the level of the thyroid gland) is most frequently caused by autoimmune mechanisms (Happ 1995;Kolevská et al 2002), and less frequently due to iatrogenic causes. Circulating autoantibodies against thyroglobulin are detected in more than 50% of dogs with hypothyroidism (Young et al 1991;Gaschen et al 1993).…”
