Schmidt's syndrome in a dog: a case report

Abstract: This report describes a clinical case and development of the polyglandular failure syndrome including hypothyroidism and hypoadrenocorticism in a 6-year-old female Black Russian Terrier. The bitch was presented because of hypothyroidism on the first occasion. Oral supplementation with sodium levothyroxine resulted in clinical improvement. Four months later, it was presented again with similar and rather vague clinical signs and diagnosed with adrenocortical deficiency both in mineralocorticoid and glucocortico… Show more

“…Another dog is reported with typical hypoadrenocorticism (mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid deficiencies) in addition to hypothyroidism (Pikula et al . ). To date none of the reports of comorbid hypothyroidism and glucocorticoid‐deficient hypoadrenocorticism have demonstrated immune‐mediated adrenalitis.…”

“…Ähnlich wie beim Morbus Addison des Menschen kann die immunmediierte Zerstörung der NNR auch beim Hund zeitgleich zu anderen primär immunmediierten Endokrinopathien, wie Hypothyreose, Diabetes mellitus und Hypoparathyreoidismus, auftreten (11,36,58,72). Bisher wurde beim Hund insbesondere das gemeinsame Vorliegen eines HoAK und einer Hypothyreose beschrieben (2,11,53,63).…”

“…Polyendocrinopathies have been reported in only single case reports or small case series in veterinary medicine, so there is a lack of information about successful treatments for combined hypoadrenocorticism and hypothyroidism in dogs. [1][2][3] Endocrine hormone deficiencies have been associated with cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. Among hormone deficiencies causing cardiac abnormalities in humans, the most consistently reported is hypothyroidism.…”
