Papillary fibroelastoma of the aortic valve in association with rheumatic heart disease: a case report

Abstract: BackgroundPapillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a rare primary cardiac neoplasm that is usually discovered incidentally at autopsy or during cardiac surgery. PFE combined with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is extremely rare, and only a few cases have been reported. Additionally, the growth rate of the tumor is unknown.Case PresentationHere, we present a very rare case of PFE of the aortic valve combined with RHD, which were identified in a female patient who survived for 5 years without surgical intervention, and w… Show more

“…In our case, the patient had a freely mobile left ventricular mobile papillary fibroelastoma with history of embolization, and we considered surgical treatment as an emergency. Depending on tumor size and location, the surgical approach is the key to intervention (14)(15)(16)(17)(18). However, some articles in the literature recommend ascending aortic or transvalvular mitral approach for CPF resection (6,19).…”

“…Papillary fibroelastoma, also called fibropapilloma, or fibroelastic hamartoma, or Lambl’s excrescence, is a rare benign lesion of heart ( 1 ). It is the second most common primary cardiac neoplasm, accounting for 4.4–8% of all tumors of the heart ( 2 ). The incidence is relatively low, but statistic dates are actually quite different from hospital to hospital.…”

“… Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare benign lesion of heart ( 1 ). It is the second most common primary cardiac neoplasm, accounting for 4.4–8% of all tumors of the heart ( 2 ). We described a forensic autopsy of a nearly drowned young man with cardiac papillary fibroelastoma who died because of a pulmonary inflammatory infiltration rich in granulocytes after intensive care.…”

“…Primary cardiac tumors are considered extremely rare with a prevalence of about 0.0017-0.28%. Papillary fibroelastomas (PFE) are considered to be the second most common cardiac valvular benign neoplasm after myxomas [Grinda 1999;Shi 2016]. More PFEs have recently been diagnosed with higherresolution imaging [Sun 2001].…”
