Paclobutrazol and Tip Pruning in the Management of 'Palmer' Mango Trees in the Semi-Arid Region of Brazil

Abstract: Paclobutrazol (PBZ), a synthetic plant growth regulator, was applied to mango trees to control vegetative growth and induce flowering. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of PBZ and tip pruning on flowering, yield and fruit quality of mango trees, cultivar 'Palmer', in irrigated conditions in a semi-arid region of Brazil. Uniform trees were selected at a commercial farm located in Jaíba County, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A randomized complete block design experiment was used with two methods of p… Show more

“…The use of growth regulators is a common practice in mango cultivation under semi-arid conditions, mainly with 'Tommy Atkins' and 'Palmer' cultivars, for which doses, times and forms of application have been defined as part of technologies to increase flowering and production (Mouco & Albuquerque 2005, Mouco et al 2010, Coelho et al 2014, Oliveira et al 2015. In addition, paclobutrazol acts by reducing the gibberellins biosynthesis (Taiz & Zeiger 2012), thus contributing to inhibit branch growth (Mouco et al 2011), promoting bud maturation and consequently favoring flowering (Davenport 2007).…”

“…Paclobutrazol decreases shoot extension and the number of shoot flushes per tree, and produces smaller tree canopies (Kulkarni, 1988;González and Blaikie, 2003;Blaikie et al, 2004;Kotur, 2012;Oliveira et al, 2015). Flowering and fruit production are promoted, depending on the dose of the chemical, tree agronomy and the weather (Kurian and Iyer, 1993a,b,c;Burondkar et al, 1997Burondkar et al, , 2013Blaikie et al, 2004;Bithell et al, 2013;Hasan et al, 2013;Salvi et al, 2013;García de Niz et al, 2014;Narvariya et al, 2014;Shankaraswamy and Neelavathi, 2016).…”
