The 'Ubá' mango tree cultivar is very important for the juice industry in the "Zona da Mata" region of the Minas Gerais State, in Brazil, but problems such as uneven flowering and low yield have discouraged producers. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of paclobutrazol, combined with branch tip pruning, on the flowering induction and quality of 'Ubá' mango tree fruits. Treatments were distributed in a 5 x 2 + 1 factorial arrangement, consisting of five paclobutrazol doses (0 g, 0.50 g, 1.00 g, 1.50 g and 2.0 g per linear meter of canopy), with and without branch tip pruning, in a randomized blocks design, with four replicates. The flowering percentage, number of panicles per branch, total flowers per panicle, male/hermaphrodite flowers ratio, number of fruits per branch and fruit quality were evaluated. Plants treated with tip pruning showed a higher flowering percentage. There was an increase in the flowering percentage in response to the paclobutrazol dose, reaching a maximum level at the dose of 1.62 g per linear meter of canopy. Plants submitted to branch tip pruning had a higher number of panicles per branch. There was an increase in the male/hermaphrodite flowers ratio with increasing paclobutrazol doses. Branch tip pruning increased the number of fruits per branch. There were no differences in fruit quality in response to the paclobutrazol application. It was concluded that the paclobutrazol application at the dose of 1.62 g per linear meter of canopy, combined with branch tip pruning, increases the flowering of the 'Ubá' mango tree and does not change the fruit quality.

a b s t r a c tMango (Mangifera indica) trees are traditionally established at about 100-200 trees per ha and eventually grow into large specimens 10 m tall or more, making spraying and harvesting difficult. It also takes a long time to recover the initial costs of establishing and maintaining the orchard. There has been considerable interest in planting orchards up to 4000 trees per ha to take advantage of early production and to increase economic returns. However, trees planted at high density soon begin to crowd and shade each other and production falls. We reviewed the performance of high-density orchards in different growing areas, and the role of dwarfing cultivars and rootstocks, tree canopy management and the growth regulator, paclobutrazol to control tree growth. There has been no general agreement on the optimum planting density for commercial orchards which vary from 200-4000 trees per ha in different experiments. Some potential dwarfing material has been developed in India and elsewhere, but these cultivars and rootstocks have not been widely integrated into high-density orchards. Canopy management needs to take into account the effect of pruning on the regrowth of the shoots and branches, light distribution through the canopy and the loss of the leaves that support the developing crop. Pruning must also take into account the effect of vegetative growth on flower initiation. Annual light pruning usually provides better fruit production than more severe pruning conducted less regularly. There have only been a few cases where it has been demonstrated that paclobutrazol can counteract the negative effect of pruning on flowering and fruit production. There are also concerns with residues of this chemical in export markets and contamination of ground waters. The future development of high-density plantings in this crop is dependent on the use of dwarfing cultivars and/or rootstocks and better canopy management strategies. Dwarfing cultivars and rootstocks should provide small-to medium-sized trees with medium to large yields. This can readily be identified in experiments by examining the relationship between yield and tree growth. Research on canopy management should assess the impact of pruning on flowering, light distribution within the canopy and the leaf area supporting the developing crop. The productivity of mango is not likely to be increased by the use of high-density plantings without extensive efforts in plant breeding and canopy management.Crown

-The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of Trinexapaque-ethyl (TrixE) and benzyladenine (BA) on the fertility of buds and the quality of bunches of "Thompson Seedless" grapes grafted onto "Ramsey" rootstock, in the Vale São do Francisco. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with 16 treatments (doses and number of applications of the plant regulators TrixE and BA), with four replications, each composed of three plants, with one plant per plot. The variables analyzed were: overall potential bud fertility, potential of the basal, median and apical branches of the plant; fertility of potential buds from the basal region of the basal and median branches; fertility of overall real buds, and of the median and apical branches; diameter of the basal, median and apical branches; Falker chlorophyll index a, b and total; sprouting buds, number of clusters per branch, clusters per plant, branches per plant; berry diameter, length, volume; fresh material mass; soluble solids content (SS), titratable acidity (AT) and SS/AT relationship; diameter, length, mass of fresh material from the clusters; shatter, fresh material mass of the rachis and rachis diameter . It was shown that the TrixE applied in isolation , one, two or three times in doses of 20 mg L -1 , or associated with BA in a single application of 120 or 240 mg L -1 , increased the rate of real fertility, but did notaffect the length of the clusters or the vegetative vigor of the plants.Keywords: Vitis vinífera L..
