PROPAGATION OF Passiflora alata AND P. edulis f. flavicarpa BY CUTTINGABSTRACT -The vegetative propagation by cutting is one of the techniques that allows to obtain uniform orchards of passion fruit, as well as of rootstocks that increases productivity and, or resistance to pests and diseases. Even so, the information on the best cutting type to be used are not conclusive. With the objective of evaluating the effects of several types of cuttings, as material for seedling formation of passion fruit, an experiment was carried out in the Fruit Science Sector of the Federal University of Viçosa. The factors in study were apical, medium and basal cuttings of the last growth of Passiflora alata Dryand. and P. edulis f. flavicarpa O. Deg. Fifty days after the beginning of the experiment, it were evaluated the rooting percent, the number of roots, the length of the largest root, the mass of dry matter of the root system, the length and the area of the root system, and the mass of dry matter of the shoot. Cuttings of the basal and medium positions presented bigger rooting potential and larger growth of the root system. Although they have not differed with relationship to the rooting percent and the number of roots, Passiflora alata presented more vigorous root system than P. edulis f. flavicarpa.
Estimates of plot size for the evaluation of phenotipics descriptors in bananaAbstract -The aim of this work was to estimate the adequate size of experimental plots, for the evaluation of phenotypic descriptors in banana, from a trial of uniformity with the cultivar Tropical, in the spacing of 3x2 m, in a useful area with nine rows of 40 plants. The following variables were evaluated: plant height; pseudostem perimeter; number of emitted suckers and number live leaves, during fl owering and at harvest; weight of the bunch and the hands; number of hands and fruits; weight of the second hand; weight, length and diameter of the fruit, in two cycles of production. The plants, considered the basic units, were combined to form various sizes of plots. The data were submitted to the analysis of variance in the hierarchical model. Plot size was estimated by the methods of maximum curvature, modifi ed maximum curvature and comparison of variances. Heterogeneity index of the soil and the detectable difference among treatments mean were determined. The variability increased between cycles with refl exes in the estimates of the plot sizes, which varied with the method used, the variable evaluated and the production cycle. The modifi ed maximum curvature method presents more adjusted estimates. Plots with six basic units (36 m²) are appropriate to evaluate with precision the phenotypic descriptors in the bananas.
-the aim of this study was to quantify and compare the levels of carbohydrates and phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity in the pulp and peel of 15 banana cultivars in two ripening stages. Four bunches per cultivar were harvested in the pre-climacteric stage, six fruits were used by sample unit. Fruits were analyzed in the pre-climacteric stage and after ripening. total, reducing and non-reducing soluble sugars, starch, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were evaluated. Cultivar and ripening stage influenced all characteristics analyzed. Unripe pulp and peel had small percentage of sugar, but high percentage of starch, especially 'terrinha' and 'marmelo' cultivars. AAB and ABB cultivars presented the highest percentages of starch, when compared to AA and AAA cultivars. For the phenolic compounds, the highest content was observed in ripe peel, followed by ripe pulp and unripe peel and pulp, highlighting 'terrinha' cultivar in all parts and stages evaluated. the antioxidant potential was higher in ripe peel, followed by unripe peel, ripe and unripe pulp. Fruits of terrinha, marmelo, maçã, Ouro and Caru-Verde cultivars showed the highest carbohydrate contents, and phenolic compounds or antioxidant activity, justifying future actions in the expansion of planting and consumption of these fruits. Index terms: Musa spp.; soluble sugars, starch, free radical.
Assimilates allocation in fruits and leaves of coffee plants cultivated in two altitudesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the allocation of carbohydrates in fruits of Arabic coffee plant during the period comprised among the anthesis and maturation in two different altitudes, as well as, the variation in its content in leaves of these productive branches. The experiment was constituted of the coffee plant variety (Coffea arabica L.) Catuaí IAC-44 cultivated at 720 and 950 m above the sea level in Martins Soares, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized with three repetitions using splitplot in time scheme. The altitude of 720 m contributed to an acceleration in the accumulation of starch, total soluble sugar, reducing sugar and non-reducing sugar in coffee plant fruits. The accumulation of starch in the altitude of 720 m preceded the accumulation in the altitude of 950 m, presenting larger earning percentage in the fruit fast expansion stadium. In this stadium, carbohydrate concentrations in leaves in the 3 rd and 4 th leave pairs of productive branches decreased abruptly indicating that this is the most critic period for the carbohydrate concentrations in leaves. Altitude influenced the extension of the cycle, as well as the assimilate accumulation by fruits and that variation in coffee plant leaves.
DIFFERENT BANANA GENOTYPES IN RELATION TO THEIR SUSCEPTIBILITY TO FINGER DROP AND FRUIT CHARACTERIZATIONABSTRACT -Natural fruit dropping of ripe bananas in result of individual separation of fruits from the hand crown, is called finger drop, this characteristic is undesirable and would limit the marketing of new cultivars. Fruits that stand out in the hand have a reduced shelf life, and do not present a pleasant appearance for customers. This study was carried out in order to quantify the susceptibility to natural fruit dropping in fruits from different genomic groups and ploidies, and to identify correlations between natural dropping and various physical fruit characteristics. Diploid, triploid e tetraploid banana plants from several genomic groups were used, altogether 37 genotypes. The physical characteristics were used in a variance analysis and the results compared with the Scott-Knott test. Results proved the high resistance against dropping among genotypes that belong to the genomic group BB (Butuhan, Piraí and BB França), Terra (AAB), Poteau Nain (fig type) (ABB) and Thap Maeo (AAB), while Prata-Anã (AAB), Grande Naine (AAA), Ambrósia (AAAA), Ouro (AA) and FHIA 18 (AAAB) presented intermediate values of dropping resistance. Among banana plants with low resistence, the improved hybrids Pioneira (AAAB), YB42-21 (AAAB), Buccaneer (AAAA) and Calypso (AAAA) and the cultivar Ouro da Mata (AAAB) were outstanding. A higher positive correlation between...
-The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of KMnO 4 on the extension of postharvest life of 'Sunrise Golden' papaya, stored under modified atmosphere and refrigeration. Fruit with up to 10% yellow peel were harvested in a commercial orchard in Linhares, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Sets of three fruit (unit mass of 289.9±18.5 g) were wrapped in low-density polyethylene films (28 μm thick) containing sachets of KMnO 4 at 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 g per bag. The bags were sealed and stored at 10.4±0.9°C and 90±5% relative humidity for 25 days. After this period, the fruit were removed from the bags and maintained at 21±0.8°C and 90±5% relative humidity until complete ripening. Four days after bag sealing, CO 2 concentration stabilized in all treatments, and was higher in bags without KMnO 4 . In all treatments, fruit reached the climacteric respiratory peak on the third day after bag removal, coinciding with peel color index of 3.5. Increasing the KMnO 4 dose reduced the losses in fruit fresh matter, consistency and pulp electrolyte leakage. Potassium permanganate was effective in maintaining the fruit at the pre-climacteric stage during the 25-day storage, and did not interfere with normal ripening after bag removal.Index terms: Carica papaya, ethylene absorber, modified atmosphere, ripening, shelf life, storage.
Bananas respond at the physical and physiological level to mechanical damage. Mechanical injuries cause alterations in color and flavor, tissue softening, faster ripening, increased weight loss, increased invasion of microorganisms, and higher enzyme activity in the affected area. The purpose of this study was to verify the physical and metabolic alterations in 'Prata Anã' bananas induced by mechanical stress at room temperature. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized, split-plot in time design, consisting of one control and four mechanical injury types: cutting, abrasion, impact and compression, sampled over time. The percentage of accumulated and daily fresh weight loss, electrolyte leakage from the injured peel region, total soluble sugar and starch contents and enzyme activity of polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase were measured. The damage caused by cutting and abrasion resulted in the highest percentage of fresh weight loss. All types of mechanical damage increased electrolyte leakage during the evaluation period, in comparison with the control. The impact damage anticipated the ripening, besides affecting the conversion of starch into total soluble sugars in the pulp. By impact and abrasion injuries, the polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase activity in the peel was increased by up to 231% and 90%, and 618% and 956%, respectively, compared to the control.
