Oxygen ion concentration in solvents for the growth of garnets

The paper deals with the solubility of (YSinLuCa), (FeGe),Ol, ,garnet in PbO-B,O, flux. An anionic model explaining t h e effect of B,O, on t h e solubility of rare earth garnet is suggested. This model is based on the ttssumption t h a t PbO in the irielted mixture of PbO, B,O,, Fe,O,, R,O,, CaO, GeO, dissociates into Pb2+ and 0,-. The oxygen anions react with t h e other oxides under the formation of BOi-, FeOi-, RO:-, Ca0;and GeOganions, until the equilibrium is established. The garnet is dissociated into the anions mentioned above. The validity of the model is verified by a n agreement of the experimentally determined saturation temperatures of the melts for L P E of garnet layers with t h e Arrheriius-type expression of t h e solubility product of garnet L = (zno:-)(3-x o ) (zCa0;-)2' (zFe0;-)(5-20) (zGe0;-)2' where zi denotes t h e equilibriuin concentrations of the anions in the melt and zo is the Ce content of the garnet film. Die vorliegetide Arbeit behandelt die Loslichkeit voiii Granat (YSinLuCa),(~eGe),0,, ini Schinelziiiittel PbO-B,O,. Es wird ein Anionenmodell vorgeschlagen, das den Einfluli von U,O, auf die Liislichkeit von Granat erklart. Das Model1 beruht auf der Annahme, da8 sich PbO in der Schmelze , in Pb2+ u~i d 02zersetzt. Der Sauerstoff reugiert niit den iibrigen Oxiden bis zur Einstellung des Gleichgewichtes linter Bildung der Anionen Bog-, FeOi-, ROg-, Ca0;und CeOg-. Granatzersetzt sich in die bereits arigegebenen Anionen. Die G ultigkeit des Modells wurde (lurch die Uijbereiiistiiniiiuiig der experinlentell bestiinmten Werte der Sitttigurigsteri1l)eratureii mit der Arrhenius-Formel fur das Loslichkeitsprodukt L = (zR0E-)(3-"0) ( z Ca0;-)20 (zFeOg-)(5-z0) ( zGe0;-)5' mit zi als Gleichgewichtskonzentration der Anionen in der Schmelzlosung und z" als Ge-Konzentration in der Granatschicht bestatigt.

Frirthermore t h e alteration of t h e relative oxygen ion concentration of piire P h O was observed after stepwise addition of t h e solvent components PbF,, B,O, anti of t h e garnet forming oxides Fe,O, and Y,O, giving cotnplete high temperature solritions for t h e Y,Fe,O,, preparation. Applying t h e Lux' acid-base concept t h e Ibehavioitr of these oxide iriixtures is discussed. Comhinations which contain weak bases and weak acids allow t h e adjustment of a desired oxygen ion concentration t h a t is little changed I)y added oxides for crystal growth. These combinations show favourable properties as solvents for oxidic suhstances with complicated compositions, e.g. perovskites, garnets, ferriten. Mit dieser Methode wird weiterhin tlie h d e r u n g cler relativen Sarierstoffionenkonzentration des reinen P b O nach schrittweiser Zrigal~ weiterer I~iis~ingstnittelkotii~~onenten PhF,, B,O, iind der granathildenden Oxide Fe,O, ~l n d Y203 his znr koiiipletten H o c h t e r i~~~e r a t n r l~s i~i~g fiir die Y,Fe,O,,-Herstellitt~g verfolgt. Das Verhalten dieser Oxidgetnische wird unter Verwendnng des Slirire-Base-Konzc~,tcs von LUX tliskiitiert. Kombinationen, die schwache Basen iintl SBriren enthalten, gestatten die Einstelliing einer gewiinschten Saiierstoffionenkonzentration, tlie durch die hinzugefiigten kristalll)ilrleritlen Oxide niir wenig verandert wird. The paper informs 011 the formation of the garnets Y3Fe501,, Y3Al,0,, end Gd,Ga501, US primary phase in t h e ternary solvent mixtures PbO-PbF,-B,03 and PbO-MoO,-B,O,. There are correlations with formerly measured oxygen ion concentrations (OIC) in t h e solvents: i) each garnet grows in ct special region of tlic OIC, t h e phase boundaries are paru.llel to t h e lines of constant OIC and ii) t h e garnet solubility increases distinctly with decreasing OIC.
