Dried varnish is rich in many ester moieties, which may be broken down into small, soluble compounds by esterase activity or alkaline hydrolysis. Two methods for varnish removal have been developed, including the treatment of either lipase or RbOH / PEG-400 crown ether which allow aged oil varnishes or paint coverings to be removed or thinned. These techniques are designed to proceed in a controlled manner without damaging lower paint or base layers. Unfortunately, lipase did not react with the aged ester groups of dried linseed oil varnish. Surprisingly, the varnish came off in the presence of Tris buffer alone which, in addition, formed reactive metal complexes. A better choice was the use of high Mr alkali ion polyethylene glycol–400 (PEG-400) crown ether type chelates. PEG-400 complexes alkali ions including rubidium and other alkaliions impeding the diffusion of their basic counter ions into lower varnish or paint layers. Possible migration of alkali metal ions into the paint layer during alkaline varnish removal was determined by labelling the cleansing solutions with 86Rb. Fortunately, varnish is degraded on the surface only. Lower paint or varnish layers are not attacked even if chemically similar to the varnish or over painting to be removed as virtually no 86Rb was detected on the paint surface.

The complex and diversified requirements of modern industry have to a large extent removed the manufacture of paints and varnishes from the category of an art to that of a science. In most plants, the manufacturing processes are now carried out under careful laboratory control and are freely modified or revised, whenever revision is indicated, in accordance with known scientific principles. As a result, the industry has been able to offer a succession of constantly improved products through periods of fluctuation in the availability of many important raw materials, pressures for solvent replacement to meet emerging air quality standards, and extensive pigment reformulation to replace mercury and lead to conform to new federal regulations on toxicity. A most important development in the modern paint and varnish industry has been the introduction of synthetic resins as replacements for natural resins in the manufacture of varnishes and enamels. By using synthetic resins it has been possible to produce a variety of coatings that, in many cases, have important points of superiority over any of those compounded from natural resins. The synthetic vehicles are particularly distinguished by their hardness and durability and their high degree of resistance to the action of water, alkalies, and other chemical agents.

The paint and coatings industry is highly diverse and complex. Architectural coatings protect houses and buildings; product finishes are applied to furniture and fixtures, prefinished flooring and automobiles; special purpose coatings are used for things like pipelines, aircraft, and ships. Oleochemicals have been an important contributor to paint and coatings technology beginning centuries ago with the use of oils as a paint binder, then as oleoresinous varnishes and, in the recent century, as a key ingredient in alkyd resins – polyesters containing oils or fatty acids. A distinct property that unsaturated “drying oils” brings to paint and coatings systems is their ability to undergo autoxidation leading to the formation of a coherent and solid film. While technical developments in the past 100 years have led to advanced coatings resin technologies such as amino resins, acrylics, synthetic latexes, polyurethanes, and epoxy resins, alkyd resins continue to be the second most used resin technology due to their versatility, ease of synthesis and ease of use. By varying the composition and raw materials used, alkyds can be tailored for a broad range of applications. Alkyds can also be adapted to be used in high solids coatings as well as in waterborne systems. The volume of alkyd resins used worldwide is expected to grow over the next decade.
