Oxidative Coupling of Methane over a Li2O–BeO System Catalyst

Abstract: The lithium-added beryllium oxide was studied as a catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane. For example, 3 mol% Li-added BeO catalyst gave 813 mmol h−1 g−1 of C2-STY and 63% of selectivity under the reaction conditions of 760 °C, P(CH4) = 76.0 kPa, P (CH4)/P(O2) = 3 and W/F = 0.0033 gh l−1. The compound oxide Li2Be2O3 was formed by Li2O mixed with BeO at 700 °C. This compound oxide might be an active catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane.

“…Iwamatsu et al [34] found that the lattice distortion, as measured by the line broadening of XRD, and the surface area were related to the activity of alkali-doped MgO catalysts. Also with XRD Matsuura et al [112] identified Li 2 Be 2 0 3 as the active species on Li/BeO catalyst.…”

“…Ito et al [Ill] reported a series of MgO catalysts with various concentrations of Li. BeO catalysts promoted with various concentrations of Li were compared by Matsuura et al [112]. Moriyama et al [113] examined MgO promoted by alkali, alkaline earth metals, and other metals at various concentrations.…”

“…Indeed when performing OCM in micro-catalytic fixed-bed reactors applying low partial pressures of reactants, yields of more than 20 % were reported for many catalysts (e.g. Matsuura et al, 1987;. These results were not reproduced when applying the feed with low partial pressures of methane and oxygen in a fluidized-bed reactor.…”
