Oxidant and Antioxidant Status in Children With Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis

Abstract: We analyzed serum alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, retinol, and ascorbic acid levels and malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione concentrations on erythrocyte and cerebrospinal fluid in 30 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis to evaluate oxidant and antioxidant status. Serum alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, retinol, ascorbic acid levels, and erythrocyte and cerebrospinal fluid reduced glutathione concentrations were decreased; however, erythrocyte and cerebrospinal fluid malondialdehyde levels wer… Show more

“…12,13 Lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress are also well-known causes of neurodegeneration in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. 7,29 Thus, increased expression of micro-RNA 181a in patients may also be a sign of apoptosis and increased oxidative stress.…”

“…6,[27][28][29][30] Certain drugs such as analgesic, anticancer drugs may also contribute tissue damage by increasing oxidative stress. [31][32][33] Oxidative stress biomarkers have been measured in cerebrospinal fluid, joint fluid, 34 nasal lavage fluid, 35 several types of tissues, 11,12,[36][37][38] or combination with blood or urine samples. [39][40][41] Oxidative stress levels were conventionally measured by some analytical techniques including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).…”
