Transparent ZnS Ceramics by Sintering of High Purity Monodisperse Nanopowders

International audienceWe report an efficient way of preparing transparent ZnS ceramics using the hot-pressing technique. It has been found that the transparency is highly dependent on the purity and the grain size distribution of the starting ZnS powders. Highly pure and monodisperse ZnS powders have been obtained by posttreatment of the precipitated powders in a H2S/N2 flow for 2 h at 600°C. The obtained ZnS ceramics show fully dense and homogeneous microstructure with average grain size of ~1 μm and smooth grain boundaries, leading to an excellent transmission of around 70% in the mid- and far- IR regions. The preparation technique described in this study is highly reproducible

-In this paper, the analytical models for the electrothermal feedback of a µ-bolometer focal plane array(FPA) are proposed and applied to the conceptually designed FPA to investigate the electrothermal feedback effect on bolometer FPA signal. The temperature and resistance change of the µ-bolometer by the electrothermal feedback(ETF) model are increased upto 20 and 35.7 % of those of no feedback case, respectively, while those by the effective thermal conductance(ETC) model increased 8.5 and 15.1 %. The integration current and output voltage of a CTIA used as an column amplifier of FPA are also increased upto 41.6 and 32.4 % by the ETF model, while increased upto 17.2 and 13.5 % by the ETC model. The proposed models give more accurate temperature change, accordingly larger signal than no feedback considering case. Electrothermal feedback effect should be considered to design a high performance and high density µ-bolometer FPA. The proposed models are very useful to investigate the transient thermal analysis, also considered to be useful to predict the responsivity and dynamic range of µ-bolometer FPAs.

Spectral selectivity in infrared thermal detection

A review is made of the physics and technology of spectrally selective thermal detectors, especially those operating at non-cryogenic temperatures. The background radiation noise fluctuations are rederived for arbitrary spectral characteristics. Infrared absorption due to phonons and free carriers is discussed followed by a review of published works on artificial infrared absorption materials such as patterned grids, nanoparticles, plasmonic structures, metamaterials and others. Subsequently, the literature of the spectral characteristics of broadband thermal detectors and spectrally selective thermal detectors is reviewed. Finally, the authors speculate on the directions that future research and development in the area will take regarding architectures, sensitivity and spectral characteristics.
