Overlay welding analysis on GTAW and SMAW processes in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion rate

Abstract: The Overlay welding process is a coating technique that is carried out using the welding process. In this study, a coating was conducted on carbon SA 516 gr. 70 with stainless steel electrodes. Welding was carried out with the GTAW and SMAW processes. The electrode used in the first coating for GTAW was ER309L while for SMAW was E309L. The next coating used in the GTAW electrode was ER316L and the SMAW electrode was E316L. In both welding processes, testing was carried out on mechanical properties and corrosio… Show more

“…Proses SMAW terkenal di industri karena sangat lebih murah untuk beroperasi, dapat mengeringkan sebagian besar logam dan umum digunakan serta mudah diangkut. Pada saat yang sama, ada beberapa keterbatasan yang terkait dengan proses SMAW seperti noda minyak harus dihilangkan yang membuat sifat perubahan elektroda lebih lambat dalam hasil pengelasan (Fikrie et al, 2022).…”

“…One of the potential weld technique is tungsten inert gas (TIG), which is a method using a filler rod to fill the weld area and inert gas (helium or argon) to prevent the welding metal from excessive contaminant during melt processes [1]. TIG welding results in good mechanical properties like hardness, tensile, bending strength and sluggish corrosion rate [2,3]. Varying parameters such as heat input, groove, fillers type, and also post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are influences the characteristic of welding metal.…”
