Overcoming local constraints when developing renewable energy systems for the electrification of remote areas in Africa

Abstract: Sub Saharan Africa has a great renewable energy potential. Rural areas are suffering from poor energy access. Some systems designed to address this issue are still faced with some difficulties. Appropriate approaches and energy plant development will help remote areas to address the issue of electricity access. The current development of some micro hydro and micro solar energy plants is of poor quality and maintenance, sometimes resulting in failures. There are also some common mistakes made when promoting (de… Show more

“…The designers and operators of hydroelectric plants, waste disposal facilities and wind farms have made numerous mistakes in the past because they were not aware of the major sustainability challenges they entailed. 96 It is essential that the government develop specific methods for promoting and educating a variety of people in order to increase regional renewable energy production capabilities rather than federal capabilities. 97 It is also necessary to create educational programmes that teach non-skilled personnel about renewable energy installations, maintenance and administration.…”
